I recently picked up a Pac-man cab in fairly good condition. The plywood is chipped off near the bottom on one side panel, but it's nothing a little bondo can't fix. The horizontal panel on the very top of the cabinet (particle board) looks really bad though. It's swollen and the paint is flaking off. I'd like to replace it, but is it possible to disassemble the cabinet safely? Otherwise, what's the best way to replace or fix this top panel? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

You would definitely be in for disassembling the whole cabinet. I wouldnt risk it for a panel that doesnt get seen much anyway. If it bothers you, take a belt sander and sand it smooth, use bondo if needed and hit it with Krylon Sun Yellow to match it with the rest of the cabinet. For extra safety in the cabinets name, I suggest taking off the marquee, bracket, and the lightbulbs inside.

If the wood is swollen, most have been reporting that you should sand it down and then apply some of that wood hardener that you can buy at home depot/lowes. I believe minwax sells it. There is a very recent thread about this on here so you could get some of this information straight from the horses mouth.

Thanks for the replies. I will sand it down and try the Minwax wood hardener and a coat of the Krylon. I already have the Sun Yellow to touch up the bottom anyways. You're right, the top panel won't be seen much so it's likely not worth the risk of cutting it out or disassembling.

You dont have to take apart the whole cabinet.
Is this the panel on the top of the machine that has the switch in it? That should be regular plywood unless they were using scraps that day....happened alot apparently.

Yup, the very top panel with the switch in it. The back door panel is also made out of particle board. Is that also unusual? Everything else is plywood.

No, the back doors are always partical board. I guess the tops could have been too, just never noticed. I will have to check out my machines and see.

Just checked out my cabs. I have two pacs that are partical board tops and one with plywood. The one with plywood is a low serial number (5096). My Mspac and super pac also have plywood tops.
