K, guys. Having issues with both games' monitors here. I can look up the models but I think you may be able to diagnose the problems based on the quick story.

Pac-Land: when I turn on the game the screen sounds with the normal high pitch. Then colors of all sorts appear in bands across the screen and cycles vertically for a few minutes. Then the screen cuts out and goes dark for a few seconds. Once the screen is warmed up, the game works great. I can't actually put credits in or play the game until the monitor is fully warmed up. I can then turn off the game and turn in right back on without warming it up again...starts right up. Is this a simple cap kit or something more?

NBA Jam: sometimes during gameplay, the red colors will go dull when the game is shaken. A few slaps to the side of the cabinet can bring the reds back. The harness is hacked meaning that that the wires are soldered directly to the pins...didn't have the right harness beforehand so a quick fix was decided.

Thanks in advance!

I can't say for certain this is the problem, but I would trace the red video feed from the NBA Jam monitor all the way back to the PCB, and somewhere you will find it is either lose and has an exposed connection.

Had a similar problem on my Berzerk, didn't have any red, moved the machine to fix it and poof red was back. Ended up cleaning all the connectors and now the video on my Berzerk looks stunning!

jam sounde like cold solder joints on the header pins or the neck transisters.
or you could have crap in the neck and the guns are shorting and needs a rejuve.

Peace

Agreed

I would say that when you soldered to the pins, you created a cold solder joint at the header.

My advice to you is... Do it right the first time instead of half-assing it twice.

pac land ....sounds like a cap kit is needed

nba.....agree that the neck board needs checked out and the connectors from the game board to the monitor need checked.

my advice to you is to learn how to crimp your own molex connectors. then you won't have to resort to soldering to header pins. :)

you seek .156 female flat molex for the RGB connector from the JAMMA harness. need the pins and the matching plastic housing.

I can't stress enough how awesome it is to make your own connectors instead of relying on splices and other assorted nonsense countermeasures. that way you are only introducing more potential failure points.

Update

Circling back to this.

NBA jam had a bad connection of the red...I just reflowed the solder to the original hack and it works perfectly. I'd like to learn how to crimp my own connectors. Has anyone done a tutorial on this?

Pac-Land: haven't gotten around to it yet. New power supply would be an easy fix though. Probably needs it anyway.

I used Bob Robert's site on how to use the Waldom HT-1921 Crimpers.

My Pac-Land was taking awhile to warm up. Someone had hacked in a switching power supply that I suspected was the culprit. So I ended up putting in a new power center with a switching power supply, transformer, a/c distribution block, etc. and made the wiring and connectors all neat and tidy. I hate Rat Nests type wiring hack jobs.:) Since then it Pac-Land has fired up right away every time.
