Pac/Jr. Pac/Ms. Pac Amalgamation Restoration & Conversion to Pac-Man Plus (Pac-Man #6599)

Should definitely invest in a flush trim router bit before doing anything else! :p

Looks like you are almost there, though. You could fill in the cutaway on the front and apply a new sheet of laminate to cover the mistake if it bothers you also.

What sucks is I was using my flush trim bit but NOT paying attention to the bearing NOT rolling along but hanging in the air…so I was riding no reference. Live and learn…

So I had a coverage plan and it's working so far. Filled in the gouge with something non-destructive that didn't need extra sanding, etc. and just put some Kwik-Seal in there. It's rubbery but it blocks dust and moisture so cool.

Then I decided to put something era-esque to cover it up and found some NOS stickers on eBay.

One is a "Quarters or Tokens" sticker that looks like it could've gone on or around any coin door and it's from the early 80's.

Next I found a bumper sticker that'll go beneath it that makes it look like the game may have been showcased and included at the Knoxville, Tennessee "Video Expo" in 1982. So, turn your screw ups into an opportunity to get creative I say. 🤷‍♂️

Of course when the kick plate art gets stenciled on there it'll be even less noticeable as the eyes will draw to the art anyway.

Anybody think of a sticker, decal, something that would've gone in the area beneath the coin door with the gouge? Kinda wanna play into it. "For Amusement Only" or something Bally/Midway or something. "Don't Kick the Coin Door" lol

I would just fill and re-laminate. At that thickness I would probably fill with fiberglass.

It's so hard on the coin doors, etc you really have to have the router bit dialed in 100%

Well…lmao…the cabinet is definitely mine now. 🤣 Had some mishaps trying to cut into the coin door area after adhering the laminate. Cut a littttttttle too far into the actual kickplate itself without realizing until it was too late. But…I'm here to document everything, including the boneheaded moves. Sigh, I sealed it and all I could think to do was mask off everything around it and spray it Rustoleum sunburst yellow. 🤷‍♂️ It's got character? I guess lol. But the kick plate is now laminated at least….Went back over after the photos and cleaned up some of that obvious routing you definitely see in the pics needed going back over. I am no pro lol.

It's great that you can pick up and move forward, I tend to get discouraged when things inevitably don't go as well as I'd hoped. But I think you might benefit from slowing down a little bit.

Man this one just has not gone my way, but I'm pressing onward.

The left side is laminated. You can see the hack job I did on the coin door that thankfully the coin door itself covers up 99% of.

But I cut too close on the back and the left side of the back door is basically naked on its own but the door still closes…lmao man. Thankfully the front, top, etc. went much better. It passes. Now to do the right side. Just need more laminate…

Are you using a flush cut bit or just a regular router bit??

Alright, not bad, not bad.

It's coming together now! My last Formica sheet arrived today and got right to applying and routing and now both side panels and the kick plate are nice chrome yellow. (Formica 1485)

I mocked on the coin door, monitor, and control panel for giggles and it's coming right together very well with the little mishaps.

I'm looking forward to stenciling thanks to the stencils I got from arcadestencils.com that also came in today. We'll see how much time I get to invest into that so it's done right so it could be a bit, I'm not entirely sure yet.

My first foray into stenciling has officially begun. Also the first time I've handled double masking. So I I went full send. I'm pretty satisfied with the results. Time consuming but the right side blue stencil is applied and masked off. There were some difficulties and little itsy bitsy tears that were just fine to cover with painters tape. Some bubbling and wrinkling from my ineptitude but that's okay with stencils because I just need to paint! Side note, @mneubey or anyone knowledgeable, you'll notice a difference between the initial and applied photos if you look closely at the farthest three vertical lines on the bottom left. I noticed that they were not torn off when I pulled the masking but the indentations definitely were there and pulled right out perfectly after I applied everything. Are those supposed to be painted with this blue stencil? They look like it but want to be absolutely sure.

Oh man, sorry about those lines! You are 100% right that those needed to come off, just missed them while weeding. Can't wait to see how it turns out!! Also, I like to use the 3m gray scotch pads to scuff up the area I'm about to paint so the paint has better adhesion.

ALRIGHT! Blue is officially on! I'm really happy with the result! I really didn't see myself getting the first layer solid but I just sent it like usual. I can't ask for much more. Tiiiiiny smudges on one side panel but easily erasable. Getting excited for red in the coming days! The first dive into stenciling has officially entered the paint stage.

Scuffed the laminate a bit before the first coat. Light mist coat went on, 15 minutes later a light-medium coat, and 15 minutes after that a third, final, finishing coat. And then 15 minutes after that, removed the stencils and the edges, for the most part, stayed crisp and sharp and the paint stuck nicely! I think the result turned out as good as I ever could've hoped for!

We're getting there now. Red is in the books. I'm loving the result, got the vinyl application down really well this time. A little chillier outside today so had to change times a bit but much the same as blue yesterday.

If you notice, you'll see in my pictures in progress I didn't realize I was missing a LOT of red because it wasn't the yellow laminate of the side panels and instead the oasis blue and ALMOST missed it. There was also that one "T" shape I ALMOST missed because the stencil didn't pull up and I was about to be REALLY confused when doing black.

Thankfully, checked my work thoroughly and all turned out red that was supposed to be red in the end. It's really coming together now and I'm getting antsy to face the black challenge and all the little nooks and crannies that come along with all the weird black on a Pac-Man. 😬

Sneak peek of peeling off black…

We still have a ways to go on this side panel and there's ever so slight tinnnny little things that honestly feel like it's coming out the factory one of a kind like they all did.

Otherwise…DUDE IT'S LOOKING SO GOOD SO FAR. Stay tuned for the final cabinet art post coming soon!

Dude I can't believe I just stenciled an arcade cabinet and it turned out this good! Is it perfect? No. Was it ever going to be? No. Just in awe though. I never thought I'd ever do it. And Pac-Man with its lines took a LONG, TEDIOUS time to peel black but finally both side panels and the kick plate are restored to their former glory! I'm glad the vinyl didn't work out. I mean it's just stunning up close. Thank you, @mneubey for the awesome stencils, these things were amazing! Everyone go get stencils at arcadestencils.com!

It feels great to be at this stage. Taking a step back on this one and really taking it in. It's time to dial in the K4600, get the 96-in-1 on the board, etc. but cosmetically we're really in the clear. Even with the little quirks and mishaps, still pushed on. 💪🏻

Magnificent!! To me, pacman, Ms pacman and burgertime are the hardest ones, and you totally pulled it off. The first one I ever did was pacman as well, and I vividly remember how floored I was after removing the vinyl after spraying black.

It'll be interesting to see how long the paint sticks to the laminate before flaking. I restenciled a Circus Charlie kickplate that used this same technique, paint over laminate. I'm not sure when the paint actually started flaking off BITD, but by the 40 year mark it was getting pretty bad. If yours lasts that long, you'll have done well. Glad to see they never did fix the lower red part of the C in the stencils, as I believe that was factory. I remember stenciling my Pacman about 15 years ago. Don't forget the blue paint flecks!

Well the good news is I scuffed up the laminate before and during painting so here's hoping it lasts
