P4 Position Install and troubleshooting

@ArcadeJason

It seems the P4 is also having similar issues with the throttle pot as did the PiPosition...

It there really a huge variation in what the OG boards can accommodate and still be functional? It seems like this shouldn't be overly complicated enough to cause widespread problems... it's an analog signal with an allowed range.

Is there something I'm missing?

Dylan
200 p4 positions out there and so far 1 or 2 people still with pedal issues that i know of . i know the latest update has more pot voltages averaged in but only for good measure not because of issues.

I have a hypothesis..
does your pot turn approximately 180 degrees?
Yes.... but only if I start by forcing the pedal up as far as I can. In normal operation I probably only get 160 degrees. In an attempt to get more, I have tried different springs hoping perhaps one might have additional tension. But alas, still a bit short.

I have a hypothesis. As I documented here, my pulley has some worn spots. Perhaps the circumference has reduced enough that the cable can't turn it as far as it needs to. I may attempt to build it up with some duct tape just as a test. If successful, hopefully repro pulleys will be available soon because certainly duct tape won't be permanent.

Whelp... my hypothesis was flawed. In fact, it was backwards. LOL! I should have paid attention in high school math.

However, that testing did lead me down an alternate path. Recalling that the used pulley I got was severely worn, I found it curious that the worn spots are where the cable should NOT have been routed. And the cockpit pedal assembly that served as the donor pulley had the cable routed per the manual; on the inner channel. So how could the pulley be so worn? It must have had been cabled wrong at some point in its life.

So... I decided to cable it wrong on mine. Take a look.

But by golly, I now get 180 degrees of travel on the pot!

And now the ACELL is reading 00 to 9A. IT IS FIXED! So obviously a previous owner of this pulley was a genius. I figured I should document it here just in case anyone else encounters this symptom.

glad you got it working!!!
after reading your post i figured i would make a simple file in case anyone needs it. this is the same shape as the original except the shaft section is larger to accommodate a steel shaft collar 1/4" id and 5/16 od you would need to glue this collar into the spindle and line the set screw up with the hole. the original is solid aluminum but since it is only turning a potentiometer it should be fine. the real question is if it can survive the cable rubbing in the center 30 years later. i would suggest printing with ABS or a metal impregnated filament.

Do you go around the screw twice, per the manual? Hard to tell from the photos.

Installed my P4 board in my PP Sit Down over the weekend. No problems with the installation and functionality, with the exception of having to swap out the original wheel encoder opto board with the new one provided along with the P4 board. I noted that observation in earlier posts in this thread, so no surprise there and was anticipating swapping the OG out. New opto board works perfect with the OG Atari game board. Love the ability to adjust the screen horizontal and vertical positioning in the sub menu. Great product and looking forward to any audio updates (especially for PP2) or any other updates when they surface.

going to put mine in my cockpit hopefully this week as well but my hardness is all jacks form someone doing the mod from the wires on the harness straight to the board and the left no wire by the connector so gotta figure out how to get those back to the harness so it sends the 5v to the P4 board yay cant wait!!!

there are no audio updates in the works. so far everyone is telling me the audio is dead on have you found something off with the audio?

any comparison needs to be with the original pcb and not mame. if you find something off i need to know what sound it is in the test mode

Been about 12 years since I played PP2 and after your comment, I went and watched Daniel Yamnitz on YouTube playing PP2. I guess I forgot how shitty first gear sounds on PP2. Kind of unsettling to be honest.

If I find anything, I will send you a message, but great work on the board and thank you for all your hard work.

Do you have anything lined up for GORF with all the customs starting to die?

Toledoflyer already has a u15 replacement available right now!!!
we actually had a u15 project awhile ago. i spoke with toledo on the phone and he mentioned he was planning on making a u15 so i stopped work on it. but recently he said if i have a solution i should finish it. so some day in the future i just may.
