I am not guilty of this yet but I was wonder who here has more than one cabinet style of a game they own. For example, upright and cockpit versions of Pole Position or upright and cocktail versions of Ms. Pac. Maybe somebody here even has a Pac trifecta (upright cabaret and cocktail).

I have an upright Asteroids and the cocktail version. I also have the upright and cabaret versions of Donkey Kong. It's been good deals on the Asteroids cocktail and DK mini that I couldn't resist.

/me coyly raises hand

Currently own a Donkey Kong upright and a cabaret. Had a cocktail, too, but got rid of it. Neither the upright nor the cabaret is leaving. Upright is classic and my first, cabaret is too cute and versatile... Matter of fact, I'd like ANOTHER cabaret! (wtf is wrong with me?!)

I might get a second version if I thought I'd like the other cabinet better, but I'd choose between the two and get rid of the other. I don't see why you'd have two versions of the same game in most cases ... space is usually a problem for folks and the space is better used for another game.

I used to have multiple cabinet styles of the same game. As I ran out of room, the dupes had to go:

sinistar UR & cockpit
star wars UR & cockpit
red baron UR & cockpit
Space duel UR & cocktail
ripoff UR & cocktail
dig dug UR & cocktail
tempest UR & cocktail

But the most versions of one game I had was Crazy climber. I had Tatio UR, Nichtubitsu caberet, deluxe UR and cocktail..

As for trading up, I have done that many times. I buy the games I like and if its not nice enough, I keep looking for a better example..

Guilty.

Sinistar UR and cockpit. Love the cockpit design on this one even though the game really doesn't lend itself to it, being a top-down shooter and all, but I think the UR looks cool, too.

Joust UR and cocktail. Again, the art on the UR is great, and the backlit plastics on the cocktail along with the fierce two-player simultaneous play make the cocktail a keeper.

Half-point: Spy Hunter UR and sitdown. The UR's an organ donor for the sitdown as it's now in pieces, but I had them side-by-side for awhile and each cab is unique.

Honorable mention: Centipede UR and cocktail. Can't normally stand cocktail tables, but I got it for free (workin' all the way) and held onto it for awhile until selling it at a Super Auctions several years ago. No contest though, the UR is way better.

Right now I have an Upright and Mini Galaga, Upright and Mini Tron, as well as a Cockpit and Upright Omega Race. I used to have an Upright and Mini Gorf and Upright and Mini Centipede, though I just have the minis now.

I like to keep the minis around, because a lot of times I'll take some games to video game conventions, and they're easy to move/transport... and they look good in my living room. The larger games look better in the arcade IMO.

Versions

I am also guilty of this.
Currently I have:

Upright and a cabaret of Galaga

Upright, Cabaret and a cocktail of Kick man

Upright and cocktail of Tempest

Upright and cocktail of Track and Field

Cocktail and a cabaret of Ms. Pac

Beside the megatouches, the only time I did that was with Tempest and Asteroids.

Tempest: UR and CT. I sold the UR because at the time the CTs were selling more. I wish I had sold the CT, but I'm keeping it because it's the only CT I have left unless someone wan't to trade a Tempest UR or Cabaret for it but I'm doubting that will happen.

Asteroids: I had a nice CT and then I picked up my UR. The CTY is in way better shape, but I like the larger monitor so I sold the CT.

I got my Super Pac cocktail for Christmas last year from my parents (yay Mom and Dad!). If I ever get a hold of a Super Pac UR, I will probably keep both. I never used to like cocktails but its definitely a keeper.

I have a friend that is in this situation. I think owning multiple machines comes down to good memories with one style of machine and also rarity of another style of machine. Say you start out with a beaten up UR Atari Warlords and you lovingly restore it. Then, you happen upon a rare cocktail version of the same game. For this collector, both are keepers. It sorta makes sense to me...
