Okay, I have a chance to get a cheap ($150) Atari Vapor TRX machine, but I have questions. (The games I have are boards) Is this a good first choice, and a good game? How hard would it be to get down stairs? What about maintenance?

Working for $150? Any driving game is worth that IMO. To get a full sized driver cab, let alone a newer title for this price is a joke. Its a no brainer you should get it. All ages will play it. Both sexes will play it. Driving games are timeless and easy to pick up and play.
I suppose some people will say "get a classic or jamma cab first", but to hell with that. My first game was the XBOX driver, and still to this day it holds up great.

The working monitor in it alone would be worth the price (if not more). If this is the full-ride on size cab, it'll most likely pull apart in two sections. The monitor side and the vehicle side. The vehicle side will be much easier to get down stairs, as it will be lighter. The other section will be heavy and awkward, so you might want to think about pulling the monitor out before hauling it down the steps.

Great find!

Obviously, you're boards will be useless to you with this kind of cab. So you'll need to continue using a supergun or something to play those, if you don't have a upright cab for them.

I own several sit down drivers. They are not cheap. Most of them come apart, and are not that bad to move. Get at least 2 people to help you.

buy it!!! thats a good one to really get you addicted.. i mean "interested" in the full on arcade game collecting "hobby"

heh.. wish i could fond one here that cheap, id snag it in a heartbeat

yeah, no doubt, that one looks really fun, too!

Hey Tupin, to give you a better idea of how great a deal it is, some guy up on the Portland CL has been trying to sell one for like $1600 for a single setup. I would say $650 is a good price, $400 is a great price, under $200 is just straight-up robbing a seller:)!!!!

I like vapor trx. I have a pair. You can link 4. Its more fun to kill your friends..

Its too bad that atari was closing/bought out when vapor was coming out. Midway just pushed it out the door and promoted their own game (hydro thunder). If they made it a medium rez game(it runs on seattle hardware) or added more tracks, I am sure it would have been a hit. I think its still a better game than hydro blunder.

The seat removes and then its just a large cabinet. If you can fit a mortal kombat down stairs, you can fit the vapor.

I think if you have to, you can remove the marquee. I noticed one that was loose on a friends game, so I assume it comes off. But even left on, the game is not that tall.

$150 is a steal. If you want to pass on it, Josh was looking for one in CA(He is looking to link 4). I paid way to much for my first one(Came out of atari) and I got my 2nd one for around $500.

Vapor uses a 200mhz seattle board. Most of the seattles (blitz) are 150mhz. But they seem to run vapor fine. All you have to do is add a header of the subwoofer.

There's so little info available about this game, there's not even a Wikipedia article or anything...

I'll have to see, I may not have the room/money...

I hear you about the room, but as for the money, think of it this way...

If it works and looks good, play it for a month to entertain yourself, then turn around and sell it for 3 times what you paid. Seems to make sense to me. But do what works best for you brotha.

I used to own one... As other have stated here, $150 is just an amazing price. It's a fun game. The force feedback is awesome. The seat is just made of a durable plastic, which does separate from the main section of the cabinet quite easily. There's a subwoofer that points directly towards the hollow seat section, so you can feel the rumble while you're straddling the thing. While the seat section is lightweight, the main section is pretty heavy. For $150, I simply would not hesitate to pick up the game.

Anyone have a manual for this game? I want to know how it is disassembled so I can split the cabinet/seat.

Oh, and the guy says it works fully, just looks "fuzzy" sometimes and glitches out when you touch a wire in the back.

seat should have 2 bolts at the top front of the seat by the coin door.

also has 4 security torx on the bottom front where it it meets the cabinet in the blue metal. 2 on the top 2 on the side.

There are no wires, so the seat just slides off..

I am pretty sure I have a manual, but reight now I don't have a scaner.

here is a pic I stole off ebay. the exact same on the other side. the top bolt is metal U that the seat slides into. The metal is attached to the cabinet. the seat slides out. the bottome blue metal piece stays attached to the seat. there are no wires.

You want to get that game especially at that price. Fortunately I just picked one up so cheap it would make everyone here cry. I have 2 posts about it on my website at http://www.thebasementarcade.com/ . In my case the main issue was a bad hard drive. They tend to go out either over time or when moving them. Luckily replacement drives are cheap on ebay and are easily copied, so you don't have to look for old stock. For the couple of people that have come over to my house recently the game is an instant hit. Like everyone else, I think I will be looking for a second one to link them up.
