If you own either an iPad OR an iPhone 4 (the earlier models are not powerful enough) and like vertical shooters, then you owe it to yourself to check out the 2 Cave shooters that were recently released. They are $8.99 each, and although cheap-asses will balk at the price, they are well worth it in my book.
The games are DoDonPachi R and Espgaluda 2. You can download a demo version of Espgaluda 2, which lets you try the first level of the game for free. Since you are using the touch screen to steer your ship/character, you have a LOT of precise control which allows you to dodge bullets in scenarios that would be seemingly impossible with a joystick.
In fact, this has gotten me to wondering if I should experiment with adapting trackball controls to a shooter to give it a unique control arrangement to add a new dimension to the gameplay...
