My new Outrun steering wheel is not straight. The game plays fine, but the wheel is off center. I was told I need to replace the large gear in the steering assembly. I see the other smaller gears for sale online, but where can I source the large gear?

Thanks, Rob

You should be able to open the panel and easily see/determine if the gear is cracked. If a gear is split, it won't align properly with the other gear and will bump/skip.

There are actually four (4) gears in an OutRun steering ass'y. They are known by the letters A, B, C & D. The B gear is the one that is most commonly reported as broken. The largest (in diameter) gear is the A gear. I think Happ sells it. Its P/N is KR-1126.

But I'm not sure that it's an A gear you need. Ignoring the visual angle of the wheel spokes and/or emblem insert... does your wheel return to a single position? I.e., if you steer left, then let go, does it turn (by itself) back to the right? Same if you turn it to the right and let go, does it go back to the left?

Oh, BTW, where to you see the other smaller gear for sale online?

It drives straight when I let go of the wheel, it's just that the spokes on the steering wheel are not straight.

Here's the parts list at Happ that has the gear on it:

However, I'd look at your gear and make sure that it's broken or stripped before ordering a new one. I think it's possible that you need to take the wheel off and reinstall it rotated 120 degrees. I think the 3 screws are equally spaced. Or, if it's not right at 120deg off, you may need to loosen a the set screw(s), slide a gear axially along its shaft until they disengage, straighted everything up, then re-engage the gear and re-tighten.

Thanks for the replies...I will pull open it up and take a look this week before I order anything.

Thanks, Rob

More great info!

How much are the A gears running. I two separate control assemblies where both B gears were cracked so I also ordered a sold steel one from Steve. It's coming in the mail.

Should I go ahead and relplace all 3 gears when doing a rebuild?

usually you only need to replace A and B. The other are usually in good shape from the three that I have worked on. Never had to change C and D.
