Hey guys, newb here. I picked up an Outrun sit-down today that has some issues. For starters, I'd be happy if I could just get the thing to power up. When turned on, the electron gun makes one heck of a racket, but I get no picture. On/off/on/off it goes, and eventually starts letting out the smoke monster - at which point I shut it off. I've poked around, but haven't found any sort of the much coveted flow charts for the Outrun. I've found one fuse on the chassis - which is good, the flyback transformer isn't leaking, the caps are not popped. However, one of the BJT's has been modified with some resistors added. Also, the pins on the electron gun look overheated and discolored. When sold, the machine's description said that the screen was new, and it might need a new pub battery. Attached are some pictures - can any of you make any sense of this or point me on where to start diagnosing?

Thanks,
Ilya

I have an outrun and would love to help but i dont understand a word you said?
prob cause im new too but still.
for one were is the smoke comming from exactly?
and as for caps, just cause they look good dont mean they are.

the problem has nothing to do with your outrun. Your problem is the monitor. Pretty sure you have a wells 7203 monitor. So start from there.

Thanks skinnyt and mrbill,

Did a bunch of reading on the Wells monitors and learned a ton.
Sorry about my lingo - my technical jargon is pretty well homebrew - correct me if I'm wrong!

As of now, the driver board seems to be the culprit - it looked like there was arcing in the socket. With the driver plugged in, the tube would arc loudly at the plates. With it unplugged, it didn't arc, so I don't think it's the tube. When I get home later tonight, the socket is getting pulled apart and cleaned.

Running the game disconnected from the monitor proved fruitless. The LED's on both boards come on and you can hear the speaker fire up, but it doesn't play blind.

Any suggestions?

Here is what the monitor is doing. The flyback is putting out 33kv. What's next on the list of things to check?

Alright, got a working monitor in it, but it seems this thing wants to fight me tooth and nail. Triple checked all connections, reseated all IC's. All I get is this.

Dead PCB?

crazy question. does your outrun move? or you don;t know yet? i know the sitdowns do move but i wanted to see if your was still working.

Not getting a thing currently. No lights, no sound, no movement and no picture. Quite irritating really.

i have a deluxe. i could tell you a few things first.
1: outrun boards are hit and miss. my sitdown actually came with an outrun board that had a graphical issues. it wasn;t until abotu two weeks ago i got a good board.
2: soon as you plug it in if the board is ok shoudl run into demo mode and you'll hear the replay kicking the lights on and off caus ethat was part of the demo to get people attracted to seeing the game.
3: if your not seeing anything its either cause you have two plugs on the board which are on the right hand side reversed or the board is bad. there should be two similar plugs on the board with yellow wires goign to them. they may be crossed.
4: if all else fails locate a good board. from what your describing sounds liek you may have more problems with it then you could image.

does the neck glow when you plug it in?

as for the board the prices are also hit and miss. i seen them go fo ras low as 100 or as high as 200. to send it out to get fixed you'll be paying alomost 300. there is only one guy i know that fixes them also so i guess that's why he could charge that much. i have to buy a stand up just to get a working board.

if you want to part it out message me cause there are a few things i could use off another sitdown for my unit. any other questions also ask and i'll anwser the best i can.

Thank you for that, it was quite informative.

I'll run out later tonight and see check the wiring again, but I'm 99.9% sure it's correct. Both red led bulbs are lit, but I'm getting no lights.

The monitor is working - the last video I posted shows what it's showing though, which isn't quite what I would like to see.

i didn;t notice that was a video. i could tell you first hand that is exactly what my board was doing. graphical error that will cost 300 to fix, if it could be fixed. that last part was word for word what the guy said to me. so just to send it out to get it looked at cost a couple bucks and then the repair will cost you. depending on what your intensions are with the machine and how much you have into it, it really is your choice as to which path to take. i paid 200 for my unit and i also picked up a deluxe power drift for 150 of the same guy. i personally would track down a stand up cab for cheap. get one that at least the board works and you can sell off the rest. my deluxe came with the broken board and a turbo board. so when i got the stand up cab my intensions were to convert the stand up to turbo outrun and bring my deluxe back to factory condition.

i wish i could helkp you out more but like i said as far as i could see your having the same issue i had with the video. now if you don;t hear sound you might be having issues with the sound board. you may be having issues with voltage all together which is just really knocking everything out of whack.

i wouldn;t lose hope thou troubleshoot as much as you can before making a decision as to what you can possibly do. i knwo not many people on here could help you with the unit.(people could help you with the basics but not many on the complete rig) maybe look local and see if someone can help. worse case scenerio you could part it out which llike i said i would be interested in a few items. best case scenrio you get it up and working but i think it will take time for that. a different thing you could think of is gut it and throw another racing game in it. actually that would be really cool if you could get a outrun 2 board and wire it up in the cab. you would be the only one that has that. you have many different options. any questions ask away and i'll do my best to anwser.

last thing. check your dip setting make sure the board is in deluxe mode. i don;t have the printout in front of me but there online. i have heard that if its not in the proper dip setting it may goof things up.

What happens when you crank up your screen control on the flyback? That's a very dark picture, and I can't note any details in it.

It's the video quality of the camera phone.
The picture was very much bright and clear, just with scrolling, scrambled junk graphics. Screen control didn't produce anything different.

Dip settings are all correct, and the power supply is dead on.

Something, somewhere is really going screwy I fear.

Ah...I hadn't noted that that was a link to a video, I thought it was a static dark photo.

Yup...some kind of board issue. Have you checked voltages? Reseated chips? Touched chips after the game has been on for a minute to see if any of them are hot?

Voltages all look good and we reseated all of the chips. None of the chips really got hot, but one next to the Yamaha chip did get warm. How much of an indicator is it when a chip gets warm that it is bad?

Figured I'd update this. A huge thank you to all those who assisted. I managed to pick up a good board from a forum member after accumulating 3 dead ones. After doing a tube swap on a heavily burned in K7000, I was able to pull up a fantastic picture. The steering needed adjustment but the gears looked to be in great shape, which I was very happy with. Sadly, the PO managed to mangle the audio amp, and it sounds like hell, so now I'm on the hunt for a 839-0035 amplifier. The shaking motor still needs some limit switch adjustments and all of the lights in the marque and dash were burned out, but this classic is being played at least 5 times a day now. Time to come up with a high score save!

Congrats on getting it running! :) Out Run is a classic for sure and I've never had a chance to play either sit-down version. I do own the cabaret version which is still a lot of fun to play.
