Outrun Modifications? Lets talk about Outrun!!!

So I got this Outrun project for free and of course I want to get it in in mostly restored shape. I totally want some of the basic stuff in there that I've seen on the forums.

Steel "B" gear
Stop block under the pedal
Suicide battery repair not exactly sure it's required.

Then I came across this japanese set of courses.

Has anyone just burned the roms themselves for this?

What else can be done?

I don't think there is a suicide battery if memory serves me correct. Besides changing the gears, I would replace the mat. Looks so much better when changed.

Can't be a free Out Run! :) I love my Out Run mini. I would agree with Slac....I don't think Out Run has a suicide battery or at least not every board does. Turbo Out Run has one for sure.

I'm still hoping that the dashes get reproduced.

I don't think the flooring once sold for these is still available.

check the selling threads. lots of outrun for sale on the cheap. Plus people are parting them out.

I've never seen or heard about those "Japanese courses." Interesting. I'll have to read up on MAWS, and check it out in MAME if I can find the ROMs... If you get them, please report back if it's any good.

Steel B gear... I've got one on order as a spare. Mine is currently working OK, but I want to have the replacement on-hand. I wish there was also a steel A gear. I don't like the idea of a steel gear meshing with a plastic one... Seems like the plastic gear may wear much faster now. I'd prefer metal/metal.

Stop block under pedal. Mine had this when I got it; I assumed it was factory. It's not?

Suicide battery... mine doesn't have one. I have read rumors that some OutRuns had one, but AFAIK it was only Turbo OutRuns (including the conversion kits) that had the suicide battery. You'd notice it as a large, funny looking, blocky thing instead of a normal CPU on your PCB.

I have an upright, and I added a PC sub-woofer to mine. There's a second set of audio outputs on the PCB, intended for the sit-down model, that has a "mix" (L+R) audio channel on it. I wired up that output into an cheap powered PC sub-woofer, added an in-line volume control (my sub was too cheap to have one) and mounted it on a tiny shelf inside the cab. It really fills out the audio very nicely, IMHO. It's a little thin from the 4" factory speakers up top.

Of course, there is the Turbo OutRun kit out there. I think it's just a set of EPROMs, a new CPU (the protected, suicide battery module, actually), and a few jumper changes on the PCB. It uses the start button for the "Turbo" button. But personally, I much prefer original OutRun. Maybe someone will use the decrypted ROMs to make a multi-game version some day...

I've never seen a sit-down Out Run in person before, but I bet the full motion deluxe cab would be fun to play.

Yeah, I agree about these Japanese courses, if you find out anything please report back. While I have yet to finish any course in Outrun I would still like to play the Japanese version.

I have a pile of parts that I hope to restore into a complete game one day.

One thing I'm probably going to do is upgrade the sound. It's not like the sound output is hi-fi or anything, but I think replacing the factory speakers with decent mid/full range speakers, a cheap crossover, and a budget/cheap sub - all done extreme budget DIY with drivers from PartsExpress would sound good. I want to do a full control panel rebuild and maybe redo the front of mine (hasp holes) with formica.

The extra courses sounds great - too good to be true?

I don't want to have everyone come after me, but for some reason I don't really get alot of fun out of playing Outrun. Even my daughter played it once and kind of bailed on it. We're playing it in MAME (with steering wheel and pedal in cockpit conversion), and it's on the automatic setting, so is that why it's not piquing much interest with us?

The music you pick seems a bit cheezy, and for me it seems like a slow leisurely drive with my parents or something. In the current form of Outrun that I'm playing, I'd pick playing PP over it any day of the year.

Please tell me what I'm missing. I want to understand! LOL

It is stereo audio. The definition of "hi-fi" has always seem abritrary to me...

Looking closely at the screenshot (map) on the ebay page about the "Japanese courses"... it looks like all the same levels, just with 4 of them switch around with regard to where the sit on the "tree" of levels. The description indicates that some of the curves are different, too. Doesn't really sound different enough to interest me very much...

I thought it was funny that the auction description said the Japanese thought that version of the roms would be too hard for players from the US and Europe. I guess I can't say a lot as I still have never beat Out Run.

Actually, OutRun uses a Yamaha YM3012 stereo DAC, which is a 16-bit DAC. CD Audio is 16-bit data. The audio amp isn't crappy either. And they used shielded cable for the low-level signals from the PCB to the amp... look like Sega certainly tried to create "hi-fi" audio. Much more so than many other games of the early/mid 80s.

I don't think the flooring once sold for these is still available.

Check out this thread and ask Jeff if he has any left. Makes a HUGE improvement in the look of the machine...

I ordered some of the Corrugated Round Rib Vinyl - 1/8" Gray from this site: http://shop.madmatter.biz/Corrugate...rrugated-Round-Rib-1-8-Gray.htm?categoryId=-1

It looks AWESOME and is a great replacement for the original Out Run floor. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I bought enough for my machine and my friend's machine. Mine is done and I must say it looks pristine.

I will be buying any more flooring I need for games from this site. Great prices, quick shipment and very high quality.

Thanks for the link I was looking for some of these mats in black to replace the step flooring on my Sea wolf and also my pole position cockpit looks like it's close to the original look. Does anyone know if I should go for the 1/4 or the 1/8 for this? The outrun mat looks great and does make a huge difference.

What size did you order that would be enough for two machines? Thanks!
