My Outrun has both display and sound. Everything looks great until I hit the gas and the car stars moving. Then palm trees and other objects flash for a split second on the screen. After awhile the cars, trees and everything disappears except for the road. Any clue where to look would be appreciated. New to the hobby and learning. Thanks in advance.

The good news is that the game is booting. That means that you can enter the diagnostics menu by pressing the TEST button inside the coin door. Navigate to the Memory diagnostics and run the test to check if any RAM has failed.

Does the game exhibit the same behavior in attract mode as well?

Good luck!

You are the man for pointing me in the right direction! I will try to get to it tonight and let you know. Thanks for the help!

reseat all the chips on both boards. this appears to be pretty common on this hardware and that's always fixed it for me.

Most common failures on Outrun involve RAM, whether on CPU or Video Bds. ROM sockets were good quality so all you may see there is oxidation or surface corrosion. Hopefully the memory test shows something bad. If so, be careful. Those traces are a lot more delicate now that its 30 years old. I have seen this exact failure....20 years ago. Memory not so good on these anymore now so I dont remember what causes it. If you give up, let me know. I still take these in from time to time.

So I did the test and it says ram's and rom's are "good."

I took some pictures. So sometimes instead of the graphics glitching only when I accelerate, it sometimes doesn't put the cars, grand stand or trees on the screen. I know it going to do this by when I start the game, there is no hand touching the radio on the music select screen as shown in the picture.

I used the testrom on my board, found ic73 bad.
In the original testmode, ic 73 passed the test.

On my other board, the original test mode found a bad ic 55.
Turns out ic 54 was the bad one, so ic numbers are mixed up too.

More pics. Here is what the game looks like most of the time. Before I start moving everything looks good. Once I hit the gas, objects appear and disappear rapidly.

I added more pics. What is a test ROM? Someone said try reseting the chips. Not sure what that means as the chips are thru hole soldered. Does that mean flowing solder on all the connections?

rom chips are usually socketed. image problems that come and go can either be bad roms or bad connections or sockets at the roms. remove spray with deoxit and reinsert.
