Steve, they look great!

I noticed you have a bunch of Outrun steering assembly pics. By any chance do you have a pic of the assembly of an Outrun mini? Not a step-by-step, just a single picture of the inside. Mine did not come with springs and I need to know where/how they hook up.

I gotta take this prototype for a couple test runs first. If all goes well, and I get past the ice mountains without crashing:), more gears will be done in about two weeks. I think they're gonna be about $50, haven't verified costs yet. I'm going to run 10 on the next run, I'll put a post up here when they're ready. I have 7 OutRuns, 6 have broken gears!!

They look REALLY nice, but wow... they're really expensive! Have you looked at how much they'd be if you were to do a larger production of them? I know prototypes always cost a lot because there's a lot of setup fees, what would they cost if you were to get 1000 of them made. Or maybe go with a different company if the one you're using specializes in prototypes instead of mass production.

I mean... someone as crazy as you might be willing to spend that kinda money to get all 12 of your Outruns fixed

, but most people would probably just part them out. If you could get the price of the gear down to $20-$25, I'd bet there'd be a lot more demand for it. If you can't afford the up-front cost (or don't want to hassle with being the Outrun gear dealer), you may even be able to talk one of the regular arcade retailers into selling them (which would allow them to have a large stock and a normal flow of sales which would pay for itself eventually).

Maybe even http://www.ram-controls.com/blog-sw.html would be interested in the project (it looks like they do that kinda work in-house).

Hey! That looks pretty familiar!

I did the same thing a couple years back, but alas I have still not yet got the machine moved into the arcade for some real 'abuse testing'...

Have you had a chance to run them for a while yet? I'm concerned about the wear on the nylon gear against the metal one-- might require replacing both...

Very cool Clay, you must be a real OutRun fan too. I have same problem as you, really haven't played it much. Although I did not notice a different feel in the steering. But, I was desperate to get my machines going so I made the gears. I now have 10 OutRuns, my own little Nascar:)!
