I've started a search for an OutRun 2 Twin for an arcade I help run. I am a little confused as to the different models and versions. Is it possible to upgrade a standard Out Run 2 to Out Run 2 SP? What does that involve?

Also, any help on the various models would be appreciated. Is the Twin just two of the standard units linked and having a new marquee?

Sorry, these are probably dumb questions, but I really can't find a ton of info on the arcade version of this online...

There are 3 versions of Out Run 2: original game, SP, SDX.

The original game can be upgraded to SP by a disc and dongle swap. SDX runs on totally different hardware.

From my recollection upgrading Outrun 2 to SP requires just a disc... no dongle swap. I netbooted SP off a laptop to my Outrun 2.

As for the cabinets themselves... Outrun 2 has a mostly WOOD single player cabinet... and there is a much more plastic single player cabinet... and I am not sure if there are dedicated muti-cabinet units or not (I've never seen more than one at a time). There is also a dedicated SP cabinet that looks similar (identical?) to the more plastic Outrun 2 cabinet.. then there are the deluxe cabinets which look like 1/3 of a car.

I have a wooden cabinet myself...

NOTE: The monitor used in them are known for having crappy tubes...

I imagine you can link up two single player cabinets, but being I only have one cabinet I can not say for 100% certainty...

You can see the SP version + DLX here: http://aha-forums.com/REVIEWSITE/index.php?action=directory;sa=details;lid=6240

Awesome, thanks for the help. I know there are "Twin" units, I have seen manuals for those...hoping to find one. I really love this game, but they seem few and far between?

SDX, that's the one where you have two people in a car, right? And can switch who is driving when you wreck? I played that at Gameworks in Schaumburg and was absolutely blown away...ridiculously cool.

Yes, 2 people in 1 car. It's pretty rare though, never seen one on the market except for the one I have.

You'll need to check your motherboard too for going from regular OutRun 2 to SP, a Chihiro type 1 will run SP but you won't be able to link 2 cabs together - for that you'll need a Chihiro type 3.

Stoked! I'm getting an OR2 next week. It's an original, not a twin. Where might I hunt down the SP upgrade disc?

Chihiro can be ran like a naomi pi setup. Might be an option to avoid the dongle issue. SP disc and dongle is pricey. I sold a dual outrun 2 setup for $1200 a few years back. Might be more now, but it is a smaller market for such big cabs.

You can download the necessary files and netboot... as long as you have a Chihiro 3 setup I believe.
