We have just added a 'reputation' or 'karma' system. Certain members can give you reputation or karma points by clicking on the 'weighing scales' icon that appears near the top right of any individual messages. Once you have enough reputation or good karma yourself, you can give other people reputation points.
Notes:
- On some systems that have reputation or karma systems, members can give each other positive or negative points. On this system, only positive points can be given.
- Reputation points are intended to reward and recognize people for their posts on this system, NOT for trades done offline or via eBay. We are working on a DIFFERENT modification to handle eBay style feedback for real world deals.
Giving Reputation:
- Admins, moderators, and members with enough reputation and board activity can give other members positive reputation points.
- Each member here starts off with 0 reputation points. Some other boards start people off with a set number of positive reputation points.
- Initially, nearly all members will be unable to give others reputation points. This is primarily due to the fact that the reputation system is new, and nearly everyone has 0 points. In order to give others points, you need at have enough reputation points yourself. Additionally, you also need to have been deemed to no longer be a new user on the site. That determination is automatic but is not being disclosed here, to discourage people from trying to game the system.
- Once you give someone reputation points for one of their posts, you are unable to give the same person positive reputation points again until you have given 24 other people positive reputation points. Again, this is to keep people from gaming the system.
- Giving away reputation points does not take away any of your own.
How much Reputation can you give?
- How many reputation points are given when you give points is variable based on a number of factors. A point grant by an admin is enough to allow a user to start giving points away themselves (provided the system doesn't think they are a new user...per above). For most users, the grants are smaller in size.
- Members need to be given points by as many as ten other members before they can start giving points themselves (again, they still need to not be a 'new member'). Points given by as few as two other reputation-high users might be enough to allow someone to give out reputation themselves.
- Members reputation grants are worth more (automatically), by a number of factors, including an extra little bump for every two years of active membership on the KLOV/IAM forums. On other systems, you get an extra little bump once your post count reaches 1000--- not on this sytem, as we don't want to give people any incentive to post worthless little posts.
- Members can only give reputation points to a few (or one or none) other members per day.
The ability to give points (absolutely, and then the quantity) is more tightly controlled here than on many other systems for a variety of reasons.
Again, 99% of you are not able to give reputation points today, though we project that many of you be able to within the next several weeks.
Thanks for your interest... and look forward to other changes in the near term.
