I'm looking to add one of these machines to my collection as I feel I need a good driving game. In everyone's opinions, which one is better to have?

I've seen the regular Out Run and Turbo Out Run in the same cabinet, so I assume they use the same wiring harness. Is that true? Could I simply have one physical machine and a boardset for each game and switch them whenever?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

Outrun hands down, no competition. I think the main difference was Turbo used a different shifter which had a button on the knob, but the start button can be rigged to produce the same results.

I love Turbo Outrun. Racing against the competition's car - which may or may not contain your girlfriend at any given point in time, depending on how well you're doing - is a lot of fun and adds a new dynamic not in the original.

I've owned both and still own Outrun. Enough said.

I have OutRun. Only ever played Turbo OutRun via emulation.

AFAIK, the "upgrade kit" version of Turbo OutRun (which included new ROMs and a new cpu for due to encryption) has a dip switch to allow you to use the Start button as the Turbo Button; vice the turbo button on the T-shifter, like "dedicated" Turbo OutRun units had.

I'm not sure if the non-upgrade kit versions have dip-switch selectable turbo button, nor for that matter if they are compatible with the harness (but I would expect so).

Get an OutRun and keep your eyes open for a Turbo boardset.
Or, hell, if you get a deal on a cheap TOR, buy an OutRun board.
Have your cake and eat it too.

I perfer Outrun rather than Turbo. Had an outrun for a few months, loved it but it was a beater, now I own an Outrun 2, currently looking to upgrade to SP tours.

This would make an interesting post.... How many people prefer the original game xxxxx over the sequal xxxxx. Turbo Outrun wasn't bad, but for me it just didn't have the same fun as Outrun. On the other hand, sequals like Spy Hunter 2, Rastan 2, Elevator Action 2, Dig Dug 2, etc. just sucked in comparison to the original.

Elevator Action is one of my favorite games ever, but Elevator Action 2 was excellent IMHO. It doesn't touch the classic appeal of the first, but the weapons, graphics, animation, gameplay are top-notch. It's awesome.

The first maybe 5 times I played Dig Dug II, I hated it and almost vowed never to play it again. Then I figured out the strategy of blowing up the islands + how to max out on points. Now it's one of the most addicting games I play. Namco put some great care into that game and, though definitely not immediately obvious, IMHO it's a really good one.

I have no defense for Spy Hunter II. Yuck. One of the worst mainstream arcade machines, ever.

The original Outrun way over Turbo Outrun, without a doubt.

However, I will say that possibly my favorite version of Outrun is Outrun 2. I have never
played a console port of Outrun 2 but the dedicated(not a daytona conversion or
something) dual sitdown Outrun 2 is a absolute blast to play head to head with another
driver of comparable skill. If you ever have a chance to play one you probably wont
be disappointed if you are a fan of the original. I will own a nice dual dedicated sitdown
eventually. Whats nice about Outrun 2 is that it is starting to come down to a relatively
reasonable price as it has been out for a while now.

An Outrun 2 dedicated dual sitdown along with a dedicated Monkey Ball and maybe a
couple of other select titles is one of the few newer titles I would have in my home arcade.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I've got possibilities on both the regular Out Run and the Turbo Out Run...trying to make up my mind.

If I had room for an Out Run 2, I'd be all over that one. The wife won't currently allow any games other than 3 cocktails and the MegaTouch out in the big part of the finished basement, the standups have to go in the back "arcade" room.

Thanks again,
Greg

I had to really bite my lip on this thread until last night when I finally got a Turbo Outrun after years of searching for one. I didn't want it to somehow go bad...

Anyhow, I have to agree that Outrun is a better game because of branching paths which help keep the game fresh after multiple plays. Turbo Outrun is just one long race along the same path with the same stages each time. The music in Outrun is also better...some of the best tunes that Sega ever encoded onto an EPROM actually.

I ignore all of this and put my vote for Turbo Outrun because of nostalgic reasons. It is behind the original, but really not by much. I appreciate the new game mechanics in TO, i.e. the turbo button can be used strategically. You now have a rival to race against, and your lady friend leaves if you race poorly. The graphics are also a lot better. The best thing about TO is that I can swap in an Outrun board when I find one and not miss out on anything. The steering gears in TO also seem to have held up better over the years from what I've seen posted in the forums. I think the side art is nice on both.
