Out of my league with a "new" monitor- help!

Ok, folks, about a year ago I purchased an unused (but out of box, no manual, no labels) 27/29" flatscreen monitor from a local forum member. I have been told it is single res/high res Happ, similar to a mark vision.

I purchased it to put in a cabinet for a homebrew arcade game project, but every time i try to test it (to help me figure out game resolution, etc), I run into some problems:

1. A constant, potent smell of too-hot electronics

2. The screen rapidly compresses horizontally. Vid here:

I've tried:

- two different computers, with different resolutions (only 1024x768 seems to work well)

-trying every adjustment in the menu and every knob I could find on the circuit boards.

-visually checked all over for where a short might be causing that smell, but no luck.

Anyway, I have worked with monitor basics in the past but am out of my league on this one, and need to ask you all for help. Is this monitor busted? Or am I missing something simple? Let me know if there is more important info I should post.

Are you using a video card at all ? It could be a resolution issue that it need a high scan rate

I've just plugged it in straight VGA into both a Windows 7-era laptop and a Windows-98 era desktop, nothing special video card-wise. Not really familiar with the scan rate issue, thanks for bringing that up.

Am I feeding it the wrong kind of signal, then?

Ugh was hoping to avoid monitor repair by buying new. May pass this one on to someone who has interest/knowledge in fixing this type of thing. Sadly I don't know where to start with fixing a monitor power supply. Unless anyone else has some thoughts on what the problems could be?
