I searched the forum but couldn't find an answer. Anyone know what the original retail cost of an arcade game was in the early 80s? Specifically, I'd love to know what the price tag was for a Donkey Kong in 1981.

Thanks!

From Atari productions numbers, most of them were right around $2000. You have to think, in 1980 that's like $6000 in todays standards. I'm sure other producers were similar in price due to competition.

Woah! And Splatterhouse PCB is on that list! I guess it was officially imported to the USA!

S.T.U.N. Runner was $3995!

Really awesome list!

$2,000.00 in 1982 had the same buying power as $4,663.38 in 2011.

Annual inflation over this period was 2.96%.

I would love to see lists for games of the '90. I really wonder how the Mortal Kombat games sold for. I remember being a teenager, and i was playing mk3 with the tokens guy at my local arcade, the arcade was empty so he would open up and add credits; we were all trying to discover special moves and fatalities, etc

anyhow, he was telling us that the boss had paid 12k for the mk3 cab.. He was probably bullshitting..

I can't be certain, but I was told by some ops back when I was a teen (and thinking hard about getting my own MK2) that they were around 4K new and that driving games of that era were around 7K new.
