I have seen a few links online, and it seems to be a good use for an old console. Does anyone have any experience doing this. I would like to turn mine into something that played classics, and classic console stuff.

How big was the old xbox hard drive....

Any of you have experience here... Anyone want to take on a project?

The Xbox One hard drive was either an 8 GB or 10 GB hard drive but was capped at 8 GB.

But through exploits, hacks and other nefarious means you could put a much larger drive in the thing. I did one a long time ago but never put MAME on it.

I've done this with my original XBox. I played with MAME on it but since I have a full MAME cab I didn't use it much. We mostly use it for Nintendo emulation and a few homebrew games. Maybe the sizes vary, but I was thinking it was only 5GB or so.

To run MAME, your Xbox needs a mod chip, or it needs to have a software exploit performed on it. I have a mod chip in mine and upgraded the hard drive to 300 GB so it holds about anything I need it to hold. It's been 5+ years since I've dabbled in modded Xboxes so I don't remember the how to's of it all. It may be easier to buy one already modded from Craigslist for about $50-$100.

the version of mame that uns best on amodded og xbox is called coin ops its avail for dl at most torrent sites(i know demonoid has it )

i used to soft mod xboxes all the time and still have most of the soft mod files allong with all the homebrew and other goodies

lmk if you need any help

as far as how mame runs
its an older build and only runs about 500 games total but still has all the classics throw a old arcade style xbox stick in and its really a great portable mame box

all og xboxes have a 8 gig hd unless they were factory repairs and then they used 10 gb

but as stated creating a new hard drive is super easy and there is no need for a stupid mod chip u just need a pc with a extra ide cable and a copy of the original splinter cell

if you check my photo bucket i have some pic walk thrues on each step required to mod the xbox and create a new larger hd

photo buckrt id is discgolfer99 and the mod pics are on the oldest few pages

If you have a somewhat older desktop PC, you can softmod an Xbox without buying any hardware or software. Its called the hard drive hotswap technique. This is how I did mine. The instructions aren't as clear as they could be, but I was able to muddle through and get it done by following this indestructible:

If you know someone with an already-modded XBox, they can create the tools to do what's called a TSOP Mod through the use of one of the 007 or MechAssault games and a corrupted save file. This is a great method, as it fully emulates a hardware-modded XBox, with no hardware to install (save for one wire added to the motherboard). I've done this method to three or four XBoxes now, and it works perfectly.

MAME runs well, I'm running the MAMEOX build. Neo Geo and some CPS-2 games suffer a bit (internal RAM limits of the XBox), but there is an execellent emulator called FBA-XXX that runs these like a champ.

You can also get RAM upgrades for your XBox, but they are a pain to install (surface mount) and the installation services are very expensive IMHO.

Also, there are some excellent controllers to "padhack" and create "real arcade" sticks for the XBox. This takes you that last-step into real arcade. Combine a true arcade controller with a nice big LCD panel, and you are in arcade nirvana without leaving your favorite chair.

Edit: Forgot that the TSOP Mod is dependent on the version of XBox that you have. The best ones are the older ones (v1.0 and v1.1), as they had a larger internal BIOS Flash chip.

Edit 2: An excellent place to get started: http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Getting_Started . Also, if you search for XBox Linux, there tends to be a little more info openly available, as it's not the grey-area that emulation is.

Mine was modded using the "hotswap" technique. It's very simple to do. I have 120GB HDD in mine and run coinops as well as the CPS3 emulator. Everything runs great on it except for the MK games.

Coinops runs everything from the classics and most Jamma up to CPS2 games. There is an excellent CPS3 emulator which runs SF3 III perfectly. I bought an XBOX to Jamma adapter to run my XBOX in a Jamma cab just haven't gotten around to installing since I started messing around with pins.

I have two that I soft modded, both using the original HD's, I only have the Neo-Geo, and Capcom cps-xx's on the HD, the rest I run right off of disc's I made, runs the coinops ingite fine and all of the older consoles as well.

Surface mount work is easy....

If you have the chips I can do the work... even if the chips are to be pulled from another board. And, I'd be happy to trade SMT work on getting a pre-modded XBox to play MAME with. ;)

I have 2 xboxes modded with Executer mod chips and 300gig drives.. I have loads of games stored on the drive and emus for most games systems along with pretty close to full rom sets.. I've got a Xarcade controller I use for MameOx.. I love the system and it still gets used more than the 360, wii, etc... There was a great install disk floating around a few years ago I used.. it installed all the emulators, dashboard, media center, etc... I wish the newer systems were able to be modded the way the xbox was done..

If anyone is interested, I do still have one extra mod chip brand new in the package...
