I have done some searches, but it's not really clear what the nature of an original Asteroids CPO is. I have heard that it's painted on, but on mine and all the other ones I've seen, it is a thin sticker, not a lexan type CPO like Asteroids Deluxe. Did they start with painted ones and then switch to a decal? The reason I ask is because I went to look at a "NOS" cpo yesterday and it was clearly a bad repro, and when I looked into it further, it seems that mine may not be original either.

Originals were screened onto the metal.

Does anyone have pictures of their overlay? I'd like to see a painted one to compare to mine. Who else has a decal instead of the original paint?

I have an original panel with silkscreened art in nice shape. I wont be home to take a picture for about 8 hours though. I am sure someone else has one they can show ya.
Many times they are worn through and rusted, where the palms of our hands would rest. Missile Command is the same way.

here are some google images of control panels...
this looks original to me.

Here is an overlay as sold by Arcadeshop

.
This is kinda weird, like its all digital art. The buttons look more like checkers.

Thank you Scott. I still want to find out which 7-11 here was his local one.

Here are some pics of mine. I couldn't see any evidence of paint until I looked at the hi-res pic, but it's there. Does anyone recognize where my repro came from?

Mine was covered by a repro overlay, when I removed it the silkscreened art was there but rusty and worn in most places, stripped, sanded, and repainted the metal with appliance paint, then installed this overlay from Wiz, only $20.

New buttons and it looks and works great, If I could get it silkscreened like the orginal was that would be perfect imo.
