I possibly have an opportunity to pick up either a Tron Pro pinball, or a LOTR pinball. I have never physically played either one, but have done a lot of research on both. I am torn! The Tron Pro is NIB...the LOTR is standard version and HUO with 435 plays. I love both these themes so I wanted to reach out and ask opinions on which one you would choose and Why? Both seem to have deep plots...numerous modes...awesome playfields and graphics...sound...etc. It is a toss up between the two and I am having trouble deciding which would be better. Opinions?? Only other pin I ever owned was a DE Star Wars... which I sold to get more games...but regretted selling it the minute it walked out the door. Now I am getting the itch again! Thanks for any info and opinions!

I have never seen or played Tron. I do own Lord of the Rings.

LOTR can have incredibly LONG ball times. That's not to say the machine is not fast, because it can be, but the depth is moreso than Tron (from what I have read).

I think both machines look great. LOTR works the theme very well. I have heard Tron does as well.

I know someone that owns a Tron and loves it. He says it is fast and somewhat unforgiving.

Are the machines the same price? I would love to be able to open a NIB machine some day.

Hope people with experience on both machines can give you some more input, but I think yuo'd be happy mo matter which you choose.

LOTR all day long...

----

I own one, and it's never leaving my house

You'll find no-end of rave reviews for LOTR ,
but not so much for Tron.

Also, just look in this forum for the number of "WTB LOTR" vs. "WTB Tron"

---

Then again, looking at your avatar, you might be biased ! ;-)

Cheers,
Steph

I've never owned either of these but have played 20 or so games on both. LOTR looks great, has a ton of playfield toys and has a deep rule set. Tron is great to look at, but I've never been able to get into the gameplay.

Overall Tron Pro seems kinda low rent to me compared to LOTR. Having said that, the Tron machines definitely have a strong following. I'd personally go with LOTR.

LOTR can have long play times with little effort. The first time I played in when it came out I thought it was great. Then I played it this summer at a hotel and I almost walked away as I could just keep playing it for ever on 1 game. It was still nice but just not hard enough. My preference is games like Twilight Zone, Revenge from Mars and High Speed.

stupid question...not a lot of experience with terminology...but "long ball times"..does that mean that the ball spends a lot of time in the playfield without being hit by the flipper? or that the ball is slow?

Not necessarily. Basically it means you can play a single ball for a long period of time.

you can't really go wrong with either game....

but if i were you i'd get one of those last runs of TRON PROS. this might be sterns final run? its a great pin, super fast and challenging (unlike lotr at times). it keeps you coming back for more. the randomness of the spinning disc is awesome too. theres a ton of great mods out there right now (the arcade 2.1 mod, recognizer mods, elwire ramps, pop bumpers, black light plastics, etc. i actually like the 2D backglass on the latetst run as well as the new decal artwork looks pretty slick too. the music is top notch too as well as theme. the added shaker is a nice feature too. great pin for parties too (short ball times fo sho).

as other have said LOTR has longer ball play. I prefer this over Tron's much shorter time. Its personal preference so LOTR for me and I also love the LOTR theme.

The NIB tron.pro is actually a "decal " version. Last run of the 3D backgkass version? Guess they had enough parts to throw another 100 machines together...but didn't have the art...so they made silk screened decals for them. So its one of 100 of those style. And yes I am a tron fan...but first I was a LOTR fan...read all the books...went to the movies multiple times...and am a huge fan of fantasy themes...dragons..goblins..ircs..elves..etc. so its a major toss up between the two. I am leaning toward LOTR as the game just looks like it has more depth...modes...etc. and I love the look of her.

Tron LE. Or no TRON at all. Trust me.
Lighted color changing ramps, shaker motor, better rules, Daft Punk multiball, cool back glass and more.
And you can add the mini TRON arcade mod.

I have both LOTR AND TRON LE never selling either of them but if I had to sell one it would be LOTR they are much easier to find.

I disagree. LE isn't worth the money, especially now since they are going for crazy money. A bit of lights, a shaker motor that can be added to a Pro, minor rule differences, a multiball mode that breaks the 4th wall, and a different back glass (the Pro is 3D, which used to be a LE thing).

Hell, you could buy a Tron Pro and a LOTR for the price of a Tron LE.

Yes...while doing research on both I see what u mean in the LE being better than pro. Those lighted ramps alone make the LE look awesome! But realistically... don't have 8000$ minimum to throw down on it! And my EDOT isn't worth that much, as much as I wish it was!

I have played both extensively. To me, I would go LOTR. I like longer games with more depth. Tron is my ultimate theme, but the game is not fantastic. It is good, not great. No ramp lights on the Pro version is a crime. Tron is not deep, in fact is is pretty shallow. I don't consider myself having a good game unless I at least get to Sea of Simulation, which is not super difficult to do. I don't think you can really go wrong with either, but LOTR is really the complete package and really sets the bar for what a Stern pin should be. If LOTR was made today, it would be a super LE priced at $10,000.

+1 on this.... the tron le is amazing. i lucked out and bought mine from trent at the very beginning of the first run. these days theres no way i could afford one (9 - 10k).

They're both great games....but totally opposite.

LOTR: Insane depth...you'll play it a thousand times and still discover new adventures, strategies, things to stack, etc. It's the "Zelda" of pinball. Because there's so much to do, your'e likely to set the game up a bit easier so that you can have a shot at all the content. Due to this, it's not a great multiplayer game.

Tron: Pure action rush. Simple rules, but super addictive and buttersmooth gameplay. It's running on newer hardware than LOTR, so the audio quality is way better. Being a quicky ass-kicker, it's super addicting and you'll wanna hit start over and over...it's also a great game to play with friends cuz no one's sitting on the sidelines for too long.

Each game is using the movie soundtracks for score...so - that gives you a sense of the tone if that matters to you. Do you want the pulse pounding electronica of Tron or the dramatic orchestral score of LOTR?

I have both games (Tron LE, though) and Tron LE is just *MAGIC*. I don't really play my LOTR that much anymore, but keep in mind I've had it since 2007 or 2008 so I've really played the crap out of it. It was pretty magical for the first few years! To the guy who says no one's saying good things about Tron...well - you're wrong! ;) Tron's so popular that Stern's churning out a few more even though they weren't going to, and the LE is selling for over 10k now. If it wasn't well liked, that wouldn't happen.

You can't go wrong with either, and I absolutely love both games. I prefer Tron, but only slightly. It's lightning-fast and very challenging, but with an easy to grasp rule set. It's a really fun game to play with friends (short intervals between turns) and the addictive gameplay keeps you saying "just one more." The Daft Punk music is also awesome.

Another sweet thing about Tron is all of the mods available for it. I've enjoyed tricking mine out every bit as much as playing it. So far I've added a Flynn's Arcade sign, the LCD arcade mod, light-up light cycles, a bank target decal, a pop bumper dress up kit, full LEDs, and a couple other odds and ends. I plan to add black mirror blades, a shaker motor, and a light-up recognizer very soon.

There's a software interactive, color-changing fiber optic mod coming out in early 2013 which will make the Pro pretty damn close to the LE. I think early speculation is it'll be in the $400 range. There are videos of it on PinSide, and it looks amazing.

Both games are winners. I'd love to own a LOTR someday, but KingOfTron's got one- and he's only 10 minutes away from me- so I regularly get my fix.

So you are saying with new software interactive, color-changing fiber optic mod coming out it will pretty much be equal to LE? Besides the silver legs. .etc.? I thought you couldn't ad the mini Tron arcade mod to the pro?

You can add the mini arcade to the Pro. You would still not get the Daft Punk multiball mode with the Pro, it's only on the LE, but it is a throwaway mode really that you will hardly ever see anyway. DP Multiball was added in the code after the fact and it definitely feels that way.

LE also has drop targets & moving Recognizer (and different rules for the target bank based on the Recognizer's position). Also silver outlines around the inserts :)

I hardly call the extra rules for the ramps "throwaway". I love earning the Extra Ball for spelling DAFT PUNK on the ramps and trying to spell it again to get End of Line Multiball. The fact that you hardly see it makes it special and a fun goal. :)
