Back in college I played a lot of Super Mario Bros on the original NES system. At the time I'd never run across the arcade version.

Now that I know there's an arcade version of the game (but haven't played one) I'm curious about the differences. It's my understanding that the arcade version has a few extras in it, but I'm just wondering if it's anything significant.

Anyone here played both? Impressions? Is the arcade version that much different/better than the NES?

Yes, but I'm curious to hear impressions from people who've played both.

Vs. Super Mario is a lot harder. There are a lot of subtle differences that add up to a much harder game. I like it better because of this. It makes it worth owning. Not tons of replay value IMO, games can take some time. But it's cool to have.

You can play VS SMB on the NES now if you're interested.

I linked the whole page because there are more VS games there... I don't want to nitpick about who made what first...

... :p

Kidding, he helped me with the mapper conversion... but technically, I was playing it first (in "cart" format... on breadboard). :p

As far as the topic though, VS is harder. It "borrows" some of the later levels from SMB2(Japanese TRUE SMB2)... also known as the Lost Levels. That way it's basically SMB up till about level 6... then all hell breaks loose.

Thanks for all the responses. Cool that you can get vs SMB on NES!

That's part of what I'm really getting at with my initial question: is it worth it as a videogame collector to go after a vs cabinet when the games are either similar to, or also available on the NES platform? Seems like it wouldn't be, but I'm sure the experience of playing on a full sized cab is different from the NES experience.

its totally different later on. the biggest difference is the farthest you can warp is to 5-1. the later levels are ridiculously tough! if youre like me or most other people who grew up with it, the NES version is pretty easy except the last level or two, playing the VS version adds a whole new dimension to it!!! if you love the game for NES i seriously recommend checking out the VS version.
