I've had a Popeye PCB for a while now and have been wanting to find a cabinet to put it in, but Nintendo cabs are rare in my neck of the woods. So I was thinking of building one. Then I saw this:

It's a rendering someone did showing Popeye in a Donkey Kong style cabaret cabinet. I've never heard of Popeye being released in that cabinet type, so I was wondering what people thought of the idea of building a cabaret. Cool idea? Waste of time?

It would be cool, if you can squeeze in a 19" monitor in that kind of cab and not a LCD. Just my opinion. If your building it to sell, it might be a tough sell.

I'm not building it to sell, I just thought it would be a cool project. I'd like an original cab as well, but the board I have is a bootleg anyway, so I figured, no harm no foul...

I don't think a 19 inch would fit in the cabinet, but I plan on going with a 13" CRT and not an LCD.

I like your CRT strategy. Do it!

I put together one earlier this year, here is the thread.

It was a fun project, I have to say! I forgot to post pictures of the final product in that thread, but it turned our pretty slick, I think. I'll take some tonight and update that thread. Anyway, if you're interested, I drew up plans based on existing photos with measurements that folks had provided over the years; bdn103 has them on his site and he's adjusted them based on measurements from a donor cabinet he acquired later on. His plans reflect a flat front that an adhesive marquee would be adhered onto; mine was modeled after Phet's render above and has a recessed, backlit marquee. I am attaching the printable, to-scale PDF of this design if you would like to print it out as a template. The speaker grille had to be lowered to allow the recess to fit, but it's a pretty negligible change - everything still fits fine internally.

I'm also including the art package I put together for it. The button layout file has black dots and circles where the button and bolt holes should go. This was included as a reference for the printer, who drilled holes for me in the plexi I dropped off before they back-masked the art to its underside. The blue corners on the CPO should be either cut or filed off of the plexi before having the art printed and are there solely for reference.

I used FastSigns when I had this printed, as they are literally right next to my office and very nice folks to work with. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I used a 13" CRT as well, with an adapter board from Mike's Arcade. If you have or can find one, absolutely go for it! It's a cute little machine at the end of the day, and of all my cabs - this gets the most playtime. :)

If this keeps your passion for arcade machines, I say go for it. While a 13" will fit. I wonder how the smaller crt will effect the game play. Take pictures and keep us updated. Thanks in advance..

Those look great! I actually created these from the pic above:

Do it! Do it! Do it!

And I don't think it'd be a tough sell at all. There's people/collectors that appreciate unique cabs. FIFJ for one?

Seeing how the DK Jr. mini cabinet turned out those few years ago (with orange sides), I think adding a Popeye mini to the world would be a great addition (gotta make the sides blue, like the upright).
