I've been looking to pick up my next cab for a while now, and finally came across something close by. I had been planning to create an X-in 1 or Multi Pac, but I stumbled across a converted Defender (Gladiator in Defender Cab) and thought it would be perfect for one of those awesome Multi-Williams machines I am always seeing on the forums.

But let's get on with the bitching! The seller was originally asking $200, so I of course lowballed him at $100. He seemed really offended and pissed off at this; I was simply making an offer. I told him I did not want to spend over $150 and he came back with a "fine, my impatience with you is your gift, come get it by Friday for that price" sort of remark.

Originally the seller had wanted $300 for the whole rig and said he had marked it down to get rid of it quicker. I was unaware of this until he brought i up after lowballing him. Had I known this in the first place, I may have never expressed interest in the machine.

Who's being an ass, him, me, or both of us?

Pic enclosed, I guess a price check on the machine would be nice as well. Not sure if I'm going to bite anymore or not.

Id pay $150 for it. Especially if I were to make it a Multiwilliams. I say take the deal now and worry about hurt feelings later.

You made him an offer , if he doesn't like the offer he doesn't have to take it .

Hes pissed because he over paid for the game in the first place and hes finally realized its not worth what he thought it was .

I don't think either party is really being too much of an "ass" here... You originally offered him 1/2 of his asking price, so it's understandable if he doesn't want to sell at $100, but it sounds like he could have been more polite about it. Not everyone has the skillset (or desire) to merely offer a polite decline, unfortunately.

I say just nab the cab and forget about the rudeness. At least he came down to the $150, so taking a little ribbing is worth the 50 bucks I'd say. On the bright side, by not offering $150 in the first place, at least you won't be wondering "Gee, I wonder if he would have taken less..."

Ok, I can see both sides of this very easily...

I see why he is/was frustrated. You offered him 50% of his asking price (which @ $200 is still fair). I get pissed when people offer me half of my asking price, I offer it up at a fair price, I always account the talk down factor in at 20% from CL sales, anymore than that and they can pound dirt! I've had some 50% offers and that honestly feels like a guy trying to kick you in the balls, I won't even respond.

From your point of view you want the best deal possible. You've hung around klov and know that the $50 cool games are out there so why wouldn't you shoot a lowball offer and see what happens? Nothing ventured nothing gained, but you shouldn't be surprised one bit.

Try selling a nice working Joust for $500, and some guy sends an offer for $250 wouldn't you feel a little hostile? I figured if the person is asking more than 25% out of what I'd pay I don't even bother...

Of course, I'm not one of those people that always must klov the price down. I pay what someone is asking 75% of the time or more since I realize that I've seen them sell for more elsewhere or in worse shape. One of my best friends this drives him nuts... He must ALWAYS pay less than what they ask, even if it was a $20 working Ms. Pac machine (he doesn't collect arcades but this is a good analogy of his attitude) He'd klov 'em down to $10... When he's there and watches me do a deal he literally yells at me about why I didn't knock the price down. I tell him it was a good deal and I was happy to pay that, which is something he doesn't understand.

Anyways, I don't really think anyones beeing the ass in your deal, you just sent an insulting offer even if it was realistic. You'll sell the game board/kit and make half of it back, so consider it a $75 multi-williams project cab. :)

I can see both sides of this one. But let me take a moment to share. I placed an add in the local trading post for a Galaga that I owned. I priced it at 700. Down price police, down. I had put about 450 in repro artwork, switching power suppy and a bunch of other stuff. It wasn't perfect, but it was pretty darned nice. At that was what it was worth to me. I got 1 call on it. The guy offered me 150 dollars for it delivered. I think my response was "excuse me, I don't think I heard you right". He then procede to tell me that he wanted this for his kid and he knew what these things sold for. I politely said, I can't sell it for that. He said, you have my phone # if you change your mind. I could see a lowball offer. But offering 20% of the asking price with an attitude soo arrogant that you wanted to beat him like a red headed step child. But I digress. You never know the kind of crap the seller has gone through along these same lines. So cut the guy inch or too of slack and enjoy your nice condition Defender cab while thinking "all's well that ends well." But hey, thats just my two bits. :)

Gladiator.

LOL!

:)

So... Do you like movies about Gladiators?

I've looked at a few games lately that I didn't feel were worth anywhere near the asking price. This morning I looked at a game and the guy's wife is the one showing it to me. She asks "do you love it or hate it" I said well I wouldn't pay $100 for it, she said "yeah me neither". I thought it was funny. I told her if they had no other interset I'd pick it up cheap and all was well.

This evening same thing games weren't worth much and the guy drop his price and it's still more than I want to pay. No big deal. Left on good terms.

I find that if you are going to make a low offer just let them know that's all YOU can spend on it. They usually don't take offense if they want more, they just don't accept the offer. - Barry

Thanks for the input guys. Decided I'm going to pass on this machine and put the $ towards another Williams/Pac cab when it comes along. Figure I should be patient instead of jumping the gun on the closest thing available.

My opinion: That is a pretty clean looking conversion. Does it work 100%?

If so, it is worth $150.

Sell the gladiator kit to make back some of the fundage - $50 or so. Sell the wiring too, because it is not jamma. It is a unique 36 pin harness.

At this point, you are at an excellent stage to make a multiwilliams cabinet. Paint the cab and get your artwork, wire up the jamma harness, and you are in business.

As for lowballing, don't feel too bad. Just be cool when you pick it up.

P.S. if you aren't going to get it, nut up and TELL the seller. I used to hate it when people wouldn't show up or call to cancel. Now I expect everyone will be a no-show loser who doesn't even have the decency to let me know. It saves me a bunch of stress.

I always have to wonder what is up with people that get offended when you lowball them. (Yes, I do it, and am proud of it!) Just say, sorry - I'm only willing to go down to X price. If the two parties don't agree, move along.

Why do some people take it as an insult? Did you design the game yourself?

Whenever I sell a machine, I purposely list it for higher than I expect. go ahead, make an offer and see what happens. I never get offended, I just say no if it's too low.

Yep, no reason to get offended. Thought I would have a chuckle if that $150 shipped guy called me. Don't think I would get mad though.

I remember one time I was selling a lawn mower at a rummage sale. The starter clutch had busted - a $20 part. I had already gotten another mower I was happy with, so I just wanted it gone. I think I had $50 on it, and it was basically a brand new self propelled $200+mower. I had 2 different tire kickers ask me about price, then start rambling on (aka, price policing) why I was out of line. I just walked off both times. Both times they just kept on rambling to themselves after I had left.

Anyone with that kind of attitude is simply someone I don't want to do business with. They are not after the item for self use, just to resell at the flea market.
