Opinions from you custom fighter control stick guys

I just picked up a CP with a 3 button layout, The CP is for an HS1, which is a 19" cabinet. I'm building the cab temporarily for Street Fighter II, and MAME once I get the parts for my 25" cabinet.

I'm trying to avoid drilling as many holes as possible.

The first pic is what I have right now. The second, what I'm thinking would be acceptable configuration. Please pardon the simple MS Paint hack job.

I just want some opinions. Do you think the staggered button layout would work? Or, should I just get it set up with the standard.

I think it could work if you got used to it. Theres really only 2 types of button configurations and thats the american standard in a straight line, or the japanese standard that is more ergonomic and has an arc to the layout. There are also many slightly different variations of the japanese layout.

I guess theres no real wrong or right config. If you like it go for it. But the die hard fighting purist would probably recommend the japanese standard layout.

The more I think about it, the more I think I should just go all out and drill the "proper" layout.

I'm thinking that's going to be the US layout, though. Because I should be able to use the two bottom existing holes.

Also, the more I think of it, the more I wish I still had access to the metal shop at our college...

Personally I find 4-in-a-row games (like the SoulCalibur series, where there are four buttons all in a row per person) more comfortable in a Japanese style arc and the six-buttoners in the American layout, I guess just cause I'm used too it, so I think the second pic you posted looks good.
