I have an Operation Wolf that more or less works but
has some sound problems.

Basically, the game plays fine. Graphics, color, gun and
all work fine.

The problem is the sound. Some of the sounds work fine, but some
are missing and voices randomly play through the game.

For example, explosions with the grenade are fine, but the shooting
sounds have been replaced by an odd little "woop-woop-woop" noise. Throughout game
play you will get random phrases spoken. Sometimes the correct phrase will play
at game start or level complete but usually cuts out or changes to another
phrase halfway through.

I've reseated everything, and have all my voltages as well as a
good solid 5 volts (I had to run some jumpers to get it).

Has anyone ever seen this problem ?

I have never seen that specific problem, but out of the five op wolves I have got only one had a working sound board....I would start lookin for one....that game is cursed. good luck...Mine works fine now but I used 4 to make one...and I have a lot more white hairs.

I would replace that zilog z80 cpu chip that is on the sound board.

I'll start there. I've been reviewing the schematics but haven't
had much time to dig into it.

Actually figured out the woop-woop-woop sound when the gun
fires. It's actually the word "Wolf" which is pronounced fully after
the last shot is fired when releasing the trigger.

I just picked up a cab for that game, Thanks to the efforts of Buffet and have several sound boards to work on soon. I have a working set of boards so if there is a particular point or place I can probe for you let me know. I would look at the mixing circuits. I don't have the schematics if front of me now but I do remember seeing a bit of mixing there. Look at the Yamaha YM3012 and probe pins 9-15 and go from there. Maybe look at the YM2151 and probe around as well as look for damage, bent/broken pins and shorts.

I don't think this is a cap issue but they should be look at also.

I am looking into my sound boards and found a potential problem with several of mine. There is a small crystal located in the lower left corner of the board, with ribbon cable at top and connectors to the left and just to the right of the N in Japan. In many of the boards I have that little blue crystal is missing or broken. It is labeled x3 and is right between ic 52 and ic 53. It is a 384 khz crystal. If you have sound problems, this is a possible problem.

That is very interesting; The sound of gun firing is replace by the word "Wolf" and as far as I know it only plays during the attract mode. Maybe something is not stopping after that word.
