Ok, so this is a game that I see fairly often and rarely working. Most of the time it can ben had for $100 or less! I'd like to fix it as it's actually a really satisfying game! Lets start by explaining the monitor works great, nice sharp picture. Freshly capped K7000. I've replaced the Optical sensor pcb in the gun with a repro unit from Twistywrist (Riptor rocks BTW!). I've reflowed the header pins on both the distribution PCB and the Aux power pcb. Checked voltage the the Eproms on the Video pcb (set to 5.03vdc). Washed the mirror and the CRT screen. Cleaned the glass lens in the gun barrel (I did have some hesitation as to the direction of the lens, I placed the convex side facing the mirror). Finally i just removed the bezel to eliminate that variable. Here's where I get to the issue. The gun will not register shots accurately. If i aim slightly up and hold the position the bullets will fire a straight line across the top of the screen. If I fire a grenade it will explode top right. If I let the gun fall back to it's natural resting position shot will not register on screen at all and grenades will burst to the bottom right. Testing voltage at the optical PCB reveals I'm getting 12vdc.

I've traced the lines back from the edge connector through the Sound PCB (top board) into the bottom pcb and the first chip the signal enters is a MC74F74N. Does anyone have any info on what pins on this chip should be active during game play or am I barking up the wrong tree. Thanks for any help and maybe if we solve this it will help bring some other wolfs back from the dead.

A 7474 is just a 'flip flop', which means it can be high or low and it stays that way until it's changed the other way. They usually don't go bad... so I'd try to trace back through that chip and see what drives it, I guess the schematics were never released for Operation Wolf?

Since you're getting something on the screen, the gun is actually working it's just it can't determine position...

Riptor was repairing a bunch of these awhile back...

Thanks for the input guys, I'll poke around with the schematics and see if I can't spot something obvious.

We talked about Op Wolf pretty recently :)

https://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=395137&highlight=operation+wolf&page=2

"If the sensor board is definitely ok, then the XY position for the gun is buffered at IC's 55 (low 8 bits horizontal), 50 (low 8 bits vertical) and 38 (top two bits of each). There are 3 horizontal counters at IC 53, 54, 37 and the vertical counterparts at 48,49,46. The lightgun signal enters this area at IC26."

Check all these IC's!

I am also having troubles with a light gun on an operation wolf. The gun seems to have a dead zone in the upper left corner of the screen maybe 4 inches or less square in that area but seems to work fine everywhere else. any ideas.

I didn't mention to the OP because he stated his monitor was really nice, but if you've got an area in the corner that doesn't respond that's almost always because the monitor is either too dark or has an area that's off color and needs degaussed.

Sorry, I didn't want to make your mouth water :)
Joking apart it seems this PCB is hard to come by nowadays.I got mine untested from Hungary and it turned out to be a rare full working prototype (with no C-CHIP) it's now emulated in MAME.There are some boardsets on Ebay right now but there are chances they are faulty

Gun issue

I had the same issue awhile back on mine. I actually took the front of the gun off and there was a screw blocking the end. Also I believe there is suppose to be a glass lens in there. When I cleaned that it actually registered again. Not sure if that helps.

I just messed with a Mechanized Attack the other day and put in one of Riptor's new boards. I couldn't get it to work at first, but figured out a couple things.

First, as you can see on the schematics, it needs 12volts AND - 12 volts. in Mechanized Attack (uses basically the same gun setup), there's a little power supply board that makes this.

If you're missing the -12, the shots will only fire on the left side of the screen. If you're missing the +12, the shots will only fire on the right side of the screen. They won't be accurate either way.

If the lens is dirty too of course it'll not work right or be off. Also like usual if the monitor needs degaussed it won't shoot right in those areas.

I'd suggest buying the brand new gun board from Riptor @ www.TwistyWristArcade.com a fellow KLOV'r, it's very inexpensive and works great, it's a slightly improved version of the original part.
