Hi there, first time poster, long time Lurker.
I finally ran into a problem with my arcade.
I came home and turned my girl on, alas only the marquee and the monitor turned on. Coin slot lights aren't lighting up and the game doesn't start up. I've done wire tracing and checked the fuses. The game was working without an issue before leaving for work. The power supply doesn't register any voltage on my multimeter. It is a Peter Chou power supply. If the issue is the power supply, can I replace it with an atx power supply and does wattage matter? If you have any other ideas or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Firstly, have you checked that the power supply is actually getting power?

If so it sounds like it's dead. You can replace it with an ATX but why bother having to do some rewiring and having to put up with a noisy, unadjustable power supply when a proper brand new arcade one costs $20?

Shameless bump as I'd like to know the answer before leaving work so I can pick up appropriate pieces on the way home. :)

You can drop a PC power supply in there, but you'll need to do some hacking. Primarily because PC power supplies (at least the newer ones) don't come on right away when they receive power. They need a signal from a power switch, which grounds 2 wires together on the PS. You can tie the two wires together if you want, and then the PS will always be one. Normally it's the green wire in the harness, tied to any ground.

If you can find an older AT style power supply, those still turn on with power applied, so that would require less hacking.

Even after that, you're still going to need to tie into the 5v, 12v and ground lines on the PS. It can kind of get to be a mess, if you don't terminate your own clean molex connectors. I've seen some pretty cruddy PC power supply brain surgery before.

That said, I echo what others have said. Just buy a replacement PS for $20 and drop it in. Buy 2 while you're at it, and keep a spare handy. I do. In fact, I keep a spare power supply in my repair toolbox at all times. It makes for quick work on a field repair.

If you DO choose to buy a new PS, consider repairing your old one. Most of time time the old ones fail due to bad caps or a fuse. At the very least, don't throw it away, someone here will take it and repair it for their own use.

Hey, tapatalk must not have been refreshing properly, hence the bump.
Either way, my plan was to fix up the power supply from the cabinet, but at the same time get it in a semi working condition prior to ripping into the old one.
I'm well aware of the power pins on the new power supplies, I can just short them out so that's not a big problem. I'm not new when it comes to electronics, I'd just rather ask questions before I do some damage :)
Also I live in a small crappy "village" in ontario, where the best source for electronics is "the Source", and it..well to say nicely, it has limitations.
Thanks for your answers.
I was just gonna try to shove her in there, connect the 12V and 5V connections and see what's up :) I'd love to keep it authentic with a Peter Chou power supply, after I get her fixed up.

Quick update and a question.
It most definitely is the power supply.
Looks like a bad cap and blown fuse, but there is one thing I'm worried about....
Looks like the tranformer? coil? beside the blown capacitor the plastic is melted off and is showing the copper coil underneath... what would cause this?
Thanks for all your help, hope I can return the favour someday.

I would not rebuild that supply, too far gone. uaually caps go high esr and thats that smoked the torrrid coils.

I would replace the supply, parts will cost more than a new one if you can find them all. Its different if they just need caps or something.

I hope you took pics of how it was hooked up for reference later.

It is time to buy a replacement supply and have it shipped in. If you cannot find one up there im sure somebody here in the states could help you out.

I would not reccomend a pc supply in this machine. op wolf is picky about its voltage and its not worth risking damage to that HARD TO FIND pcb over a $20 supply.

cadillacman thanks for that, I've included a picture of the worst damage.
I did label all my wires, I've been trying to find a power supply on ebay, I'm not really finding the correct amps though. I have found +-5/+-12 switching supplies but most of them are +5 15 A, +12 2.5 A. Is that an ok replacement since the op wolf supply uses +5 11A and +12 2A, the price is right, just figure the amps are too much, suggestion? :)

Edit : Not shown is the demolished fuse.

The actual coil appears to be fine in that picture, I think it's just the casing that's damaged. Anyway, if you do decide to replace it, the new supply having a higher amperage is not an issue. Unlike voltage, current is only drawn as needed.

Since this was the first time seeing that, I was kind of surprised.
And thank you, so the 15amp happ power supply is good to go than. Excellent, ordering two today.
I'd love to be able to find a cap kit for this model, if replacing one cap I'd rather replace them all :)

Sounds like you already have it figured out, but for what it's worth, I had a switcher in my Operation Wolf and it worked just fine.

+1

That is what is in mine and recently had to repair a ground wire that came loose. It caused all sorts of issues like the ones you are having. In my case, It was a green ground wire that came loose from filter board in the lower right side of cab from back door.

The green FG wire was disconnected from the power supply, im not sure if it came lose or if it was taken off, also traced the green FG wire around the cabinet and where it connected to the coin mech it wasn't connected, I reconnected that now.
Still waiting on the power supplies, I'm hoping by the end of the month. It's kind of sad, since I usually played the game after work...you know..stress relief :)

I know;

Nothing like killing a bunch of bad guys and saving some of the hostages to make a bad day better.

I am getting several parts together for repairing the sound boards on these games. The only trouble is the custom chips.

If you get a hold of the chips, or get a contact for them, could you let me know? I'm gonna try to stock up on parts, just in case :) and wouldn't mind having a few replacement parts along the way :)
