When the Garcade was in its development phase, and pending spousal interaction (not to be confused with approval, since it IS the garage.. the only place in the home I have free reign), the wife provided three things she thought would be neat to have out there one day if it were possible. 1. a jukebox (which she has, SMC-1), 2. a Donkey Kong machine (we haven't gotten there yet), and 3......... A Coke machine! As of tonight I'm 2 for 3!!

(see pics)

Can't wait to hear Ken Layton chime in on this one, as he always seems to share my interest in the "non" vid bucket!

If you get an older machine that needs a charge do you have to make any mods for the new refrigerant? On cars it is pretty easy but I have not messed with other systems.

Damn it I wish I could find at least a pic of the old machine I used to love. The one where the cans would come down, and there were like 4 or 5 holes at the bottom you had to pull the can through. 9 times out of 10 it would get turned sideways and you had to maneuver it around to get it out the hole. The selections were oval shaped and there were buttons underneath the ovals.

Something like this Cavalier?

I recall those too. I have a beat Vendo 63 out on the porch but I really want one of those old bottle/can machines with the selector dial.

The seller claimed it works, but I did not get a chance to mess with it last night. They were calling for snow in our area, and the machine was an hour from home so I wanted to make sure I got it home and in the garage before the "fun" started.

I'd really like to have one of the ones that has more of the 80s look, but right now we don't have a lot of cash and the woman was only asking 50 bucks for this one. I figured this way the wife would be happy, and if another one comes along we can always trade up to a different model. Plus, I'm a "light" guy, so I'll actually be psyched if the light in the top works, even if the cooling part doesn't(at least I think there's a light in it- haven't gotten that far yet).

I want to thank you guys too for being here to share this acquisition with. Neither my wife's family nor mine really considers these things interesting (games, machines, etc), and our few friends could either care less about this stuff or, get jealous because we have things like this and they don't. It sucks when you're really excited about something like this that you've scored, and when you go to share it you have to hear "well that was a waste of money" or "what in the hell do you plan to do with that thing??". At least here at KLOV, people appreciate the whole aspect of it: the hunt, the fact that you made it to the seller's location without the seller switching directions and giving it to someone else, the feeling of accomplishment knowing you got this pig of an antique into your vehicle, the fact that you got it home without getting killed or pulled over, and most of all, getting the thing OUT of the vehicle yourself and into its new loving home. People who don't do this kind of thing tend to miss all of those 'minute' details!! I thank you all.

I had one for a while that I got free non-working in beat shape. I got it running, fixed the busted coin mech, but the compressor was shot. If I even turned on the compressor it would pop the fuse. I ended up selling it to some lady for $40. She drove all the way from Columbus to pick it up in a huge box truck. It was hilarious.

It was a choice vend square top, so documentation was non-existent, and the forums at the soda machine sites are dead. I lost interest.

Now, I am much happier with the mini fridge as my pop dispenser than I would have been paying $30 a month to run a loud, space hog pop machine. :D

Wow that brings back memories! those days when soda machines didn't need bill acceptors. :p It was poolside by the motel along the freeway. Lend me a dime, I've only got 30! :D

Do your memories show whether or not the top lights up? :D I haven't gotten to research it yet.

Yeah I hear ya shard, I don't want to pay $1000 to restore a machine I paid 50 bucks for. If it's that insane to fix, I'll gut it and keep a cooler in there or something LOL.

A cooling system overhaul will run you about $400 if you need it.

If all you need is a recharge, you should be able to find a local refrigerator repair person licensed to recharge the old systems. That's why the lady I sold to bought mine - her brother does all of the refrigeration repairs for her.

It was always daylight out. :)
Just break out the toolbox and pop that puppy open!
hope to get to check tonight if i don't find a manual online today. We'll see what happens. It just hit me too that an item like this is perfect for an arcade that has something in it that you would like to hide ie a fireplace -friendly jab at phet-

Having a working soda machine in the gameroom is a blast. I use mine all the time, and it is very convient when we are having a party. I put a new compressor in mine (cost 75.00). Has run like a champ for 3-4 years now, and keeps the soda and beer ice cold. Good luck with getting yours working.

Mark that is our exact plan (for bday parties etc). Can you tell me where you got the compressor from?

Would love to see a pic also!

You make it sound so simple...
Who installed the compressor for you? Sure a compressor is cheap, but installing it isn't just a 'take a few screws out' process.
