OMGWTFBBQ! - I can has TAPPER! - video w/tutorial and pics! (MCR battery replacement)

I have been searching for a Tapper for some time. The game is probably my wife's favorite arcade game. And, well, it's one of my favorites too. A local friend had one for sale and I jumped on it. I also picked up a Centipede from him too.

Cabinet is a little faded, nothing major. Game plays and sounds great. I had to replace the switching power supply to remove the hum the game had when I got it and added a battery for high score save. Check the video for details.

HUGE thanks to my NEACF brothers (Brian, Scott, Dan, and Dan) for coming over on Saturday to help me move this into my basement and gigantic thanks to Ray for hooking me up with the Tapper and dropping it off on the way to Funspot.

Cool ! Looks like its in nice condition . You have a Rom Burner ? Is that how you added free play ?

Yes, I added Free Play using my ROM burner.

1) I copied the EPROM's data to my computer using the burner
2) I patched the original ROM data with the patch and patching software found on this page: http://users.rcn.com/jenison/mars/romhacks/
3) I erased the original EPROM with my UV eraser (I didn't have an extra chip, so I nuked the original)
4) I then burned the patched data to the EPROM.

Nice pickup John! It's great when you find a game your wife will enjoy.

Are you going to try and get the Simpsons version as well? It's kind of a cool hack if you're a fan.

Hey, thanks!

I am not sure about hacking my ROMs with the Simpsons characters. It seems like a cool idea, though. Can you do it so they are selectable?

This does look cool!

Does it change the sounds too? Or just the sprites?

I forget, but I know the can shaking screen is replaced with Bart shaking the can. I've only played it once at CAX last year. Really cool. But yeah, if there's no way to switch back and forth, I would just keep it original or possibly find another Tapper board if they aren't too pricey and hack that one.

The novelty really wears off fast. Not only that, I had issues getting the Freeplay rom to work with it for some reason too.

Normal sprites + Freeplay no issue...

Especially next to a Domino Man like we have, why would you want too? ;) Now you just have to get it running...:D

They needed to change the Budweiser logo into a Duff logo, and maybe replace the word "BAR" on the window on the first 2 boards to "MOE's", then it would have been perfect :D

Oh, I agree. I would only consider it if it was switchable. I like the mustache'd guy. In fact, I like all mustache'd guys.

Does anyone know if the Arcadeshop control panel overlay is the only one available? Is it close enough quality that everyone is satisfied?
