This is my Mothers Day Omega Race. Monitor is good, confirmed working via Asteroids Deluxe. I had some minor acid damage on the PCB. No traces were damaged, nothing on the back of the board. Cleaned up all acid, vinegar bath etc.. 5 components and a socket to be replaced.

So I got my parts from Digi-Key yesterday. Popluated the PCB, checked all traces, and reinstalled. Powered up and lo and behold, attract mode! Went to plug the CP back in to play a game, and the screen blanked out and the spot killer came on :( Power cycled and I was greeted with just an "o" in the lower corner of the screen. Seems as if the game starts to run, but freezes up now after maybe 1 second.

Voltages on the boards are good, connections seem sound. RAM has been replaced with 9114's

Any ideas on what may be happening?

And here is a pic after removing components and cleaning up board. Wire wheel on dremel, vinegar wash, rinse and dry.

Quick update, it actually boots up, but just for 1 or 2 seconds. I can see a whole screen like it is credited up and ready to go. One of the start buttons blinks as well. Before I can even read the text, the screen goes black and the button stops being lit.

Reset? Watchdog?

Maybe the watchdog is causing it to go into reset but never releases, and thereby the game hangs instead of continually rebooting? Just a guess. Maybe it's worth disconnecting the watchdog from the reset input just to try.

Not that I'm an expert by any means. Just my guess in case someone more knowledgeable doesn't chime in. :)

Keep forgetting to congratulate you on the pickup, btw. Nice to hear of a flipper not making a dime on his flip.

Well congrats on getting it working that much, that's a lot further that I have got with mine so far. Just keep picking at it vector games can be a pain in the ass but once you get the issues fixed they can be really solid. They are the best games to learn repairs on since the PCB design is simplistic compared to newer games. My Asteroids Deluxe bit me in the ass more than once before I got the bugs worked out of it. :D

Thanks for the replies guys.

I did feel the chips to see if any were getting hot. I didnt really find any hot ones but I will try that again. It seems as if the longer I wait between power cycles, the longer the game will run for. We are still talking seconds though,

The coin door harness was really hacked, I unplugged it in case of shorts, I am going to try to get the game into test mode and see if it satays up longer that way.

One more thing, after it "shuts down" the 1 player 2 credit cone button will blink about 20 times or so.

Test mode indicates bad RAM at S3 and/or S2. Thats of course the socket I replaced, I will triple check all traces.

Just in case, can i mix 9114 and 2114 RAM's?

Bad RAM turned out to be....bad RAM.

Confirmed by moving 9114 to different sockets and getting bad RAM errors in different locations. Makes sense, this was the RAM that was installed in the socket that was damaged by battery acid (alkiline).

Now to look for some 9114...

Found a 9114, replaced the one in question, and now we have a working Omega Race.

Mission accomplished. I suppose the lesson here is, if you are replacing a damaged socket, it is a good idea to replace what ever IC was in there as well.

I will have to check out that spinner mod. I have noticed times where I cant really aim where I want to.

And... cant have a thread without another pic.
