I'm working on restoring an omega race upright and am pondering what to do about the sides. They appear to be made of a really hard black coating on melamine and I can't imagine that it will be easy or even possible to remove. But there is significant gouges and frayed edges. Should I just fill in, sand this material as smooth as possible and paint (black satin oil based) or attempt to remove it?

The front is similar in that it's that same material in orange with a crack and several drill holes for a lock bar. The front is not as bad and I could perhaps just put in black bolts to make it look better and leave it.

Of course the front kick plate art is faded and scratched and needs to be reproduced. I'm considering scanning it and trying my hand at reproducing since I can't find it anywhere. Anyone have it somewhere already scanned or replicated?

You can't remove that. Personally, I would just touch it up (black is easy) and leave it at that. I prefer to leave things as original as possible. I know there are lots of people here that feel the need to go all out with a complete refinishing (fill, sand, paint, or apply laminate).

Yeah. Unfortunately mine is in pretty rough shape (at least by my standards) and I need to fill a bunch of problem areas. It's good to know that my suspicions are correct and that I can't remove it.
