I saw the KLOV price of an Omega race boardset is rapidly nearing the $300 mark. I've always been concerned about the linear power board in my particular game. I understand it generates some oddball voltages, but would it be possible to at least route the +5V and +12V from a switcher to eliminate some of the risk of using the linear PS? I was just thinking about a molex connector or two and some wire to keep the cost low. Weigh in: Good idea? Bad idea?

All I know is at 3 bills for another board, my OR may never live again. I'm not saying that the work on the boards isn't worth that amt (to those doing the repairs), I just know that financially I can't swing that. Not to mention I only paid 60 bucks for my whole OR! :(

Hopefully another solution presents itself one day.

Your not the only one in that boat, I know reading here it may seem that way though, my wife has now officially been unemployed for a full year, no end in sight either......and my OR is about the same as yours.....:(

Feel better?:D

Tell your wife that a guy she's never met is sorry to hear about her situation and I hope it gets better soon :(

There is a reason Omega Race games can be had cheap.... :)

As to the OP's question, I don't see why there is any additional "risk" in using the original linear power supply. A cheap switcher is not going to die any more gracefully. Your time would be better spent replacing the caps on the PS to insure it is running at its best.

I was the one who purchased the last board at that price and here was my thinking. I saw the last board before the one i got also go for around $300 and thought that was crazy at 1st. It actually is crazy but,,,,, The Cabinet that i have is in amazing condition and the OP gave it to me for free. The monitor works, everything is there except the boards. So for under $300 i'll have a very nice game that i played the shit out of when i was a teenager :)

Thanks for the comments. I've already upgraded my linear powerboard caps, just in case. I think a working boardset is worth $300, so I wouldn't feel bad if I had to have the PCB. And, at least your Omega Race won't end up costing $800 like mine! Totally worth it though!

And your reasons are definitely justified. I have no memory of even having SEEN this game in the arcade, and playing it for me on MAME is kind of meh- I just want to fix mine because it's another vector, and I like vector games. So, my priority just isn't as high as yours is. But hey, it's all good!
