Omega Race replacemetnt boards!

Omega Race hardware is basically Asteroids with a Z80.

Maybe we should make a version of Omega Race to run on Asteroids hardware then. :D Scott could add it to his multigame....

As for price on an OR replacement board, I can't see anyone making this for under $200. I'd love to see someone prove me wrong though.
And for those requesting high score save, OR already does that... so I would think that would be a given on any replacement board. It doesn't save the daily scores, but I wouldn't want it to.

If he uses an FPGA to replace everything digital he might be able to significantly reduce the cost both in number of components and PCB size, I've heard of people using them to reduce entire PCB sets down to one chip and a handful of external components.

Wow, awesome project Tim! :beerchug:

I'd be down for a set if it's in the $200 range... maybe even the $250 range just to have a stable OR. (ours is down still from the party we had months ago) ;)

I have 2 boards- if you fix one of them, you can have the other! I could even run them up to your house!

LOL, I just got another 2 and a half sets really cheap as much as I paid for one set. So at some point I'm going to buy bulk parts and go production line fixing them but its some time down the road maybe the end of JAN or FEB before I'm going to have the finances and time to start.

Sigh.. This game is the Hellraiser of games. "We have such sights to show you.........." -Pinhead

1 - How many people would be interested in such a beast? YES I WOULD
2 - What price range would be acceptable? about 150-200
3 - Would people want a complete board set, or just the main board? If its cheaper..just the main board
4 - Any inputs as to features, etc...? Just make sure to use modern battery technology. lol
5 - General thoughts? Umm How soon can I get one?

Making a replacement pcb that plugs into the daughterboard shouldn't be that hard...just make the new board with a smaller connector then make an adapter (either in cable or pcb form) to go from one to the other.

1) I'm interested
2) $150-$250 would be reasonable, although honestly it's valuable enough to me that I'd be pretty flexible with price.
3) prefer complete (would pay extra), would buy main if that's all that was available.
4) nvram saves. I don't think anything else is needed as far as multigame, etc, since the controls are unique.
5) Make sure to get the frequency response right on the audio compared to the real board. That's the my only (very slight) complaint with the jrok multiwilliams board.

Ok.. don't get _too_ excited yet, but my buddy and I are looking for a winter project and are toying with the idea of making replacement OR boards.
These would not try to be exact copies of the board, as that would be silly.. but will be done using modern technologies (much like jrok's multi-williams board).

The questions are:

1 - How many people would be interested in such a beast?
2 - What price range would be acceptable ($150 $200 $250, etc)
3 - Would people want a complete board set, or just the main board
4 - Any inputs as to features, etc...
5 - General thoughts?

Not trying to get rich (we all know how well that works in this hobby!), just looking to exercise our engineer brains and OR is something that definitely needs a replacement board.

cheers

To threadjack just a bit..

I'd be interesting to hear what you think is so different ? I've side by sided Defenders and Robotrons without any noticable difference, and that wasn't just my observation. The WMS will go louder if you're aiming for ear bleeding volume.

Yours sound identical except that yours generates frequencies that are higher than the original that make it sound a little harsh. I've only compared to two original WMS audio boards, and I need to be more scientific. It'd be pretty easy to add a low pass filter on the output to make them sound the same. I've been meaning to record both and do frequency analysis to figure out where the cutoff needs to be, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

Mind you, I already have two of your boards and hope to get another one when you make more, so it is a minor complaint and is easily fixable. :) Is still the best modern classic gaming product and the only multigame board that I've been willing to use so far.

You should try replacing the capacitors on one of your Williams sound boards and compare them.

Any updates on this project?

Unfortunately not... It hasn't been forgotten, and there was some initial work done around xmas time, but it seems to have slipped down the priority list :(

Still interested in/planning on doing it... these types of activities tend to progress much better when surrounded in snow :)

cheers

I missed this the first time, please add me to the list of "would buy". Any reasonable price is good, add-ons don't matter (though maybe the on-screen settings like the Blaze HS kits have would be nice, as well as maybe sound in attract-mode options). Please do this!!!!!

Yeah, but Tim... if you come through on these then I won't be able to get one gajillion dollars for my working PCB set!!! ;)
