Omega race PCB repair #4

Like Channelmaniac said, probably a bad power supply. I have the power supply here so I will check it out later. All of the ram were good though, I would have thought they would have died but you will never know for sure.
One thing is sure, it's the worst one yet! :)

How do I find the bad chips? Again like CM said. For example, the X and Y channels are pretty much identical . If you have 4 missing inputs to a chip then either that chip is dragging them down or the one that is sending those signals has failed. A lot of the time you will see activity with a logic probe so you need a comparator to check the logic is correct (or the timing)
The state machine is the hard part because an area may look dead but really it's just waiting for a go signal. For that area I keep a section of good IC's on some anti static foam...I can quickly run through each chip with the comparator if something looks odd.

Omegaman, I replaced all the RAM myself, I got the thing to test and it told me they were bad so I changed them, hoping the game would spring to life for my trouble. After I did the test gave me the same results and I knew I was out of my league, so I sat on it hoping I could find someone a hell of a lot smarter than me that was willing to give it a go...

Any more updates before this thread gets put back another few pages??

Yes, I changed another 6 or so chips last night......If I hadn't replaced half the board already I would have given up :)

Work has been hectic, So I've had little time to post updates.

I should get some more time later this eve to update properly.

The suspense is killing me.

*grabs the popcorn*

Ditto here. I'll be at work this evening but I'll be checking up on the read. Hey Omega, anything come in the mail over there yet??

ROFL.. it would be cheaper just a buy board from someone else..

Dam.. lots of bad chips.

At least I retain the Most acid damaged title so far:)

I know, that seems too far gone. I still have the easiest to fix title despite how it looked :)

Yes If I had to buy Chips at a normal price I would probably have to think about it. Luckily for me and for the person that owns this board...I have 3000 or so NOS logic IC's that will keep me going for years. I charge for them but nothing near the price they would be to buy online now.

I have given up fitting sockets though, it was getting silly :)

I dunno..I have one that I've not only had to remove sockets but other board components. I'll start a seperate thread on that one though. ;)

Is this what happens when the linear power board used in Omega Race goes bad? I rebuilt mine with new electrolytic caps years ago at a high cost (larger ones were pricey). After reading the other logs combined with my lack of coin door & marquee lights, I am starting to look at the tantalums. When I redid my Armor Attack I took them all out and replaced with electrolytics of the same value. I guess I could do the same here?

Yes I'm pretty sure that's what happened. The Tantalums always seem to die and go Short rather then open. I've not looked at it yet, will do soon.

I may as well just pull the remaining chips, it's so hard to fix a board like this as everything is dead...apart from the processor side of things.

enough for tonight....fingers crossed I will finish it tomorrow.......then I have to fix the sound board :(
