Omega race monitor repair

That's the same monitor as Atari B&W vectors. You could pull out the two boards and send them off for repair if there's no one local.

What's wrong with it?

Hi,
I'm not sure, I'm not very technical with monitors at all. My pcb is bad, too, but someone who looked it over said he thought the monitor wasn't working. I don't know how to troubleshoot it. Any ideas?

Thank you!

Jeff

If the motherboard isn't working (or not working properly), it'll trip the monitor's "spot killer"....thus, shutting down the monitor (even though, the monitor could be fine).

I'd say you joined the forums at just about the right time... and the two people talking to you here are probably the foremost experts in OmegaRace hardware... and... if you've got the moola and the skillz--I'd highly suggest getting yourself a new (yes brand new) reproduction board from douglasgb... While they're still available... if they're still available.

Yes, make sure the PCB is working before futzing around with the monitor. And it's Omega Race, so the PCB is bad. Pretty much guaranteed. Look for battery acid damage in the corner. If it looks pretty clean then douglasgb is amazing and fixing these and has great prices. Highly recommended.

Thanks for all the responses. I have three boardsets, only one of which I would say looks fairly clean. How much is board repair vs looking at the repro's (if still avail, which looks like not)? Thanks again,

Jeff

Repro boards are sold out but I can work on your original boards. Cost depends on what's wrong, but basic (non battery related) repair starts at $85. The board uses AD561J DAC chips which are obsolete and now cost around $25 each (and it has two). You can send all three sets and I'll fix the best one and give you options on the others. Nice to have a spare (or two!)...

Jehuie is right about the monitor... not knowing what led to the assessment that it is bad, it could be that the red LED (spot killer) being lit was interpreted as a bad sign when in fact it's how the monitor protects against burning a spot into the middle of the face of the tube. If the game board is bad that's what you'd get on a good monitor.

On the other hand, it's a good idea to do preventative maintenance on the monitor boards so you could get them serviced regardless. Or if there's no 'neck glow' (faint orange light at the fragile thin pointy end of the tube) then you surely do have monitor troubles.

There are more troubleshooting steps possible if you have a) other vector games or b) an oscilloscope or c) a multimeter and d) the desire to spend the time and effort!

Great, I 'd love to get them to you and see what you could do. I'll pm you on next steps.

Did you make enough off of this run to make it worth while? Will you ever do another run?

It was worthwhile for the sense of accomplishment in seeing those nice clean boards and because I wanted one. The question of another run depends on getting enough people to commit so the run is economical. I had interest for 33 boards and follow through on only 21.
