Omega Race High Scores?

Isn't that what the infamous PCB-killing-battery does?

If not, what IS the purpose of that battery?

It saves only the highest score. You can just put a 3.3v cordless phone battery mounted remotely and it will save scores again.

Out of i think 4 sets i rebuilt and got working, all got external battery kits, but none would save high scores.

check the charging circuit. Also the battery needs charged for awhile before it will save the scores. Mine loses the scores if I don't play the game got while. You might also have a bad 5101 chip. Someone needs to design a nvram replacement kit. Any takers?

My guess is that until omegaman fixes more than 5 sets, there won't be a demand :)

Yes it saves scores if the circuit is working correctly, and you have replaced the battery.

Ditto here, mine saves the highest score, no others and has the replacement off board battery mod. My high score is 124,300

Omega Race rocks

Several people have made 5101 NVRAM replacements over the years (that chip was used in many early solid state pinballs). I believe Spaeth still has some of his. I have one in my Omega Race.

Gaplus has a battery on the power supply board, and it saves nothing. I think this is due to them using the same power supply board as the MCR games though.

When you say they "made" them. Do you mean some kind of satellite board that matches the pinout of the 5101 or an actual nvram that is a direct plug in replacement?

I just use a 1F, 5.5v battery backup capacitor on mine and it'll save scores for over 4 or 5 months without being powered up. Like said previously, only the top one and two credit scores are saved.

I guess I'll add that my single credit high score is in the 300,000-350,000 range. ;) ORDs rocks!!!

I might just do that. I'm thinking the cheap Chinese cordless phone battery I got off ebay might be defective. 300,000 is a ridiculous score. I'd like to see your techniques. I can't break 100k on one credit. Do you fly around a lot? I just spray bullets like a mad man. I love the game so much. Its a shame there's so few of them working.

Ditto here and ditto on the ORDs too!

They are adapter boards (nobody is going to fab a new chip with a 5101 pinout). They come fully assembly with the NVRAM included (ready to plug-n-play) for ~$30.

God I love it when things like this happen...

I picked up the Omega Race from a local (and fellow KLOVian). The game came in pieces but the seller assured me that the of the 2 PCB sets, one worked and the monitor (WG V2000) worked.

He'd verified both by swapping in to his working cabinet.

He said that the cabinet I was buying probably had a bad power supply... he wasn't sure... but that the game wouldn't work in the cab.

During my break I was able to pop out to the garage to take a look. I checked all fuses and they all seemed fine though one is pretty corroded and will need to be addressed. The monitor is not in the cab at this time... I figured what the hell and plugged it in to see what DID work.

I press the interlock and notice a couple things.

1. Front control panel marquee lamp fired up.
2. Blacklight lamp inside the cabinet did not fire up.
3. The red LED on the PCB set came on.
4. No noise at all.

I figured since the monitor was a couple feet away and it's only a single plug I might as well see if anything comes on screen.

I pulled the monitor over and plugged it in. Upon pressing the interlock switch (which has no "pull" option curious enough) I noted the monitor fired up... the spotkiller fired for a second then went away...all good signs.

I was greeted with this:

W00T! Evidently the power supply WORKS. The fact I am getting ZERO sound concerns me slightly...though i was told that they THOUGHT they put the good sound board in the cabinet...but if I didn't get sound to swap the sound board with the other one... so that may be the issue.

I was absolutely stoked to see the game come up on screen.
