Older pinball machines

Why were these machines flat? You see an old (EM) pin up against a newer pin and the stance is more of a slant on the newer one, and the older one is FLAT, but the ball does eventually make it down so it must be elevated a bit, but dont look like it is. Am I missing something? They look funny next to each other.

The playfield angle is actually at about the same level as newer pins. The difference is newer pins have toys/ramps/multiple layers. As such, the glass angle was increased to add the head room necessary for all of that crap by the tmie you go to the back of the playfield.
 
PF slope is about the same, the slope of the glass is what is different. Take a look at how many mods some have fit into a TZ or LOTR game sometime.
