Old arse air compressor - Think I can paint with this?

I bought this monster today and was wondering if I can paint my cabs with it? Of course after I get it setup and running first.

One of the tags say 115-230
So it will run on both 120 and 220?

The motor is wired to run on one or the other. What does the plug look like? If there's no plug, I'd wonder if it was hard wired in to a 220 box.
 
No plug Joe... That is why I tried to get some shots of the tags. I swear I think that big tag on the tank says 1944 or 5.

It could possibly do just fine for painting. I'd drain whatever oil is in that and figure out how to top it back off. I'm guessing it's not oilless? And you'll want to put a good drain valve on the tank as well as an inline oil/moisture trap.
 
Yea I know I need to do some work on this puppy. Oil change will be #1 on the list. I wonder if I can still get parts for these?

Looks like it says phase 1, 2 and 3 on one of the tags. Then it has different horse power for them...
 
I'd say you're fine like they said, just wire it up for 120 or 2 phase 220 (we use 220 to save electricity at our house), and make sure you install a good dryer and newer standard fitting on the output.

Harbor freight sells the fittings but honestly they've been very hit or miss. IN fact I bought a tire fitting a few weeks ago...put some air in a tired, pulled it away and the center piece shot out to oblivion. Decided no more HF fittings for me.

Can anyone tell what kind of cfm this compressor will push? Can I run air tools with it?
 
Sure you can run air tools. You'll just have to see how the performance will be with a sprayer. I bought a valve and fittings at Lowes to put the drain on mine. Mine is a <10yr old Craftsman, but what you need to look for is - Is there a drain on the bottom? Is it a cheesy petcock, like on a radiator. Is there just a threaded plug? Whatever it is, you can remove and take to HD or Lowes and find a heavy duty valve for draining moisture/air out.

I haven't had to time to really study it. So not quite sure yet what all I need size wise. Hell I had to evict a PP1, two rotor tillers and my lawn mower just to get it into storage. It took all day just to make sense of the space and i am still not done yet.

Looks like I need to buy all kinds of stuff to run air. I need to make sure it works first before I spend that money.
 
Have you removed the cover on that electrical junction box attached to the side of the motor? There might be a diagram inside the cover showing how to change the wiring for different voltages. The horsepower and amperage draw are the same at either voltage. 220V just enables you to use smaller supply wire.

The diagram is usually on the data plate. Hope its not three phase. Thats a small compressor, probably not three phase.

That is the data plate for the Pressure Switch, which tells the motor when to turn on and off based on air pressure.

The diagram they are referring to is typically on the electric motor itself. (wiring diagram)
But some that old may not have one.

It's definitely single phase. Just a matter of whether it is currently configured for 115v or 230v.
Is there a plate on the electric motor with a "model number" of sorts ?

Is there a plate on the motor itself? Thats where the wiring diagram for the motor will be. Some motors can be configured for 120 or 220 depending on how its wires, some are not. If you cant figure it out just bring it down one day. I wire motors all the time at work. Most of the ones we have at work are three phase and up to 400 HP. It cost over a grand in electric just hitting the start button on some of them.

He checked the oil then we ran a drop cord out to it. Hooked up the white and black wires and plugged it in. Fired right up and let it run a min or two. Unplugged it and then the air went swoosh then just a steady leak down.

I went and got my old craftsmen 1/2 air gun out of my tool box and plugged it in to the Q/D. Fired it up for about 4/5 mins and pulled the trigger on the gun. It ran the gun but not at full speed. Ok cool!

I don't have any kinds of gauges to check pressure on this thing and that scares me. Anyway unplugged it again and the same thing swoosh then a steady leak down.

I wonder how long it would take to build full pressure? Also is it supposed to leak down like that after you unplug it?

Nothing was hot to the touch but we did have a 100ft drop cord to the compressor.

My god this thing is quite!

Oh hell no but thanks anyway. My back is still hurting me from moving this thing. My girl said the only way were are moving that beast again is when we move. I agree 100% with her trust me.

Also my brother in law said before we hooked it up that if it didn't work we could take it 2 miles up the street and scrap it for half of what I payed for it. Meaning I would get back a twenty spot. lmao

All is good!
