I just bought the first two Monkey Islands on Steam a couple of weeks ago and have been eying the Kings Quest and Space Quest collections.
I've been looking around at some other games as well: Eric the Unready, DOTT, Quest for Glory, Freddy Pharkas...

I'm also trying to think of the name of another one. I think it involved a teenage magician and that's about all I can remember about it right now. Probably came out in the early 90s. Any guesses?

Anyhow, does anyone have any other favorite adventure games from a while back that I should check out?

Sam and Max, Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion (original DOTT), I think Full Throttle was one also.

I love the original Sam and Max, and Doy of the Tentacle. Two of my favorites of all time.

Simon the Sorceror?

You should check out ScummVM:

Sam and Max Hit the Road was an awesome game. I used to love the anticipation building up as I installed a new game from floppies.

Oh, and Simon the Sorcerer was the one that I was trying to remember.

Loom, Indiana jones series-especially fate of Atlantis, Kyrandia series....

Edit: also add Quest For Glory series, Robin Hood, the one by Dynamix!

I already do own Fate of Atlantis. I played the first two Quest For Glory games BITD and thought they were pretty friggin sweet.

Haven't played Loom, though.

When I was younger I was a huge fan of Sierra, Dynamix, etc.

A little off topic but does anyone remember Spectrum Holobyte?

I loved Vette and Falcon 3.0

Edit: Just watched a vid of Vette...I never realized it sucked so bad. Thought it was badass back in the day.

Back in the day I was a junkie for those games...

Text: Zork I, II, and III then Enchanter and Sorcerer... Next was Leather Goddesses of Phobos.

Graphics: All of the Space Quest series... King's Quest series... and of course, all of the Leisure Suit Larry series.

"Geez those pointy shoes hurt!"

I've had damn near every LucasArts SCUMM game ever made and enjoyed them all. Same with all the old Sierra adventure games. I think it was King's Quest III that started it all for me. Years later it was Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis that revived it. I must have played through that game dozens of times. I used to have an AOL screen name called FOAHintMan and spent a lot of time in the games section of AOL helping out people who got stuck. Man, that was a long time ago.

For those who haven't checked them out yet, be sure to try out the newer TellTale games, including the upcoming Back to the Future series!

Space Quest 2 was the first Sierra game that I got into. I owned all the Space Quest games at one time or another. I've only beaten King's Quest 1, 5, 6, 7. Quest for Glory 1 was freaking awesome. Police Quest 3 was also a personal fave.
As for LucasArts, I think that Monkey Island 1 was the first one I got. Then I got FoA, DOTT, and Sam and Max.
BITD, I used to trade games with people from Prodigy and The Sierra Network. These days, I think it would be crazy to straight-up trade games with people over the internet that I had no other dealings with. And these weren't copies I traded. This was the boxed game with all documentation (how else would I answer the crappy copy protection questions without my spinner wheel or -my favorite- the playing cards from Alone in the Dark?).

Crap...now I miss my big row of Sierra boxes all lined up nicely in a row. Except for The Even More Incredible Machine which had a funky, jacked up box.

Games I never played but am going to hunt down now: Gabriel Knight, Laura Bow Mysteries (I'm a sucker for Roberta Williams games), Monkey Island 2 (I'm actually playing through that right now on Steam), Betrayal at Krondor...and some others but I'm going to eat dinner now.

Neuromancer, Maniac Mansion, Beneath A Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen are worth a look.

Rise of the Dragon and Heart of China are two more I remember.

Worst one I played was Dark Seed.

I played Rise of the Dragon. It came in a 3 pack with Red Baron and KQV bitd.
I don't remember much of it but I remember I liked it.
Need to get Red Baron again. I used to play that multiplayer on the Sierra Network.

I really wish some of the old lucas games would come out on DS.

I think it would be an excellent platform. I've done a few adventure games on the DS and it works out very well.

For the ones you can't get on Steam, I can point you to a place to download them...I know that that is questionable for some people, so I won't share the link directly. I've also found a few of my favorites real cheap on ebay here and there. I got a CIB copy of Sam & Max Hit the road for like $5 a few years ago.

Well, if you have an R4 or the like, you can get SCUMM VM for DS. It does work quite well :)

... nice... very nice.

I will have to check that out... but I don't have an R4, sadly... although it looks like it's on PSP as well... probably won't work as well, but at least I can try it.

I think I tried the one on PSP years ago and didn't use it much. I don't care much for these types of games if I have to use a joystick to control the cursor - just doesn't work well if it's not point and click.

If you have a DS phat or lite, an old school R4 card can be had for less than $20 in most cases. Well worth it for SCUMM games alone, imo :)

I remember Beneath a Steel Sky didn't work properly for me. Albion was a cool game, I have that and Rise of the Dragon but both of those are pretty tough. My favorite was probably Phantasmagoria, except for when you had to put in another CD. That game came with a crap-load of CDs.
