I hotwired the game just to play it (in my 25+ years of video games, I have NEVER played the actual arcade Defender) and it's playing the wrong sounds, lol

is the sound data stored in the roms on the rom board? I gather the rom that's on the sound board is not for the samples, but the sound board code?

I might as well go ahead and replace the rest of the roms from my old rom board.

asisto, por favor.

What is the label say on the sound ROM? There is usually a label that says "Video Sound ROM #". Defender is #1.

well if it helps any, I was swapping roms from the old board into the new one and noticed that roms 6 and 12 were switched around.

getting closer I reckon. :)

bump.

I changed over every single rom from the old boardset to the new. I'm still getting incorrect sounds.

is this a software issue or a hardware one? :)

I may have asked this before too, but how do the sound boards mate to the rom board? I plugged in my old sound board for fun and didn't even get anything out of it that time, at least before I got the new boards I could press the diagnostic button and it would play the tones over and over.

The sound board is a stand alone "so to speak". It has it's own processor, power, etc. Check the ROM # as Ken has stated, it is directly on the sound board.

Ken never said anything to me?

if you're talking about the "Video Sound ROM 1" I changed that out too. they were the same between my boards. now the other larger chip, I'm assuming that's the controller chip for the sound board.

when I installed the new boards, I forgot to change out the sound board and it kept playing the diag tone over and over. that's why I thought they were different. that was when I had the rug pattern too, before changing out all the roms on the rom board to get the game to work.

Dokert, are the game sounds in the rom on the sound board or are they contained in any of the roms on the rom board?

It is my understanding that the sounds are contained in the Video Sound ROM on the sound board.

Check both fuses on the sound board, and all of the voltages on the sound board too.

I'll take a gander at it next time I'm out there.

remember when I cranked the voltage when I had the rug pattern? I dropped it down a lot too once I figured out wtf was actually wrong.

I hear this game is a PITA with switchers... does that fall in line with my problem here by chance?

Switchers suck ass in William's games except for Moon Patrol which is IREM.

maybe, I have no clue how you have it wired up

Many of the Williams sounds are actually a combination of sounds played at once, so if even one sound is missing, many of the others may sound wrong.
You can ground each pin at the 10J3 connector one at a time on the sound board and see if a sound is produced. If any sounds are missing, then it is indeed a sound board issue. If not, then it could be a ROM board issue.
Since you do have sounds, just wrong ones, I would maybe try swapping the PIA chip on the sound board. (6821 if I recall)

Been awhile since I played with a Williams, so correct me if I'm mistaken fellas.

I read that the original PS board output -12V for the sound. is -12V required for sound operation? cause I don't think that was hooked up on mine, or if it's even common on screw terminal power supplies or not.

ah okay. yes, mine's wired for -5V then. I wasn't sure if it made a difference.

you should see this apparatus that whoever made this conversion to the switcher did... instead of molesting the original power harness, they just made a male molex plugin adapter with wires that go to the screw terminals. lol

since the original harness was left alone, I'll just assume that all the right voltages are going to the right places. I checked it against the header on the main board and everything was correct.

I'll try swapping the PIA chips next time I'm out there.

Check the diagnostics on the system. IIRC Defenders have the same sound test as the later boards, it is just not as convenient to get to. You need to have the test switch on and press the advance switch to get to the diagnostics, then follow the prompts.

There are 2 PIA chips used to communicate the sounds. There is one on the ROM card and a matching one on the sound card. That is why grounding the pins is an easier test than just swapping 6821s which are rarely socketted.
