ok newbie Centipede question

i would have said start by checking voltages.check them at the traansformer, then the ar board, even get a rebuild kit for the ar board and recap it,buy a big blue for the transformer.from there go to the edge connector, personaly i would have said keep it but,if you look at the boards edge connctions 9the fingers) look to see if any are black/burned.if they are, replace the edge connector with a better quality one.

concentrating on what you are seeing ie:the monitor does not mean that there might be probs elsewhere,so you wanna work from the ground up.also at the same time you will be bulletproofing the parts of the cab from future use.

if you have a gameboard prob you wont get much there but,the picture should be stable and also if the gameboard was working you should be able to credit it and actualy hear it playing blind.

gameboards can be repaired, cos you say you are a noob i think sending it off for repair would be your only option, thats if its faulty.

everyone here was a noob at one point, you pick it up as you go along.
:)

pull the monitor and test it in the Pacman that you just bought. That will tell you whether or not the monitor is good.

be careful what you touch on the monitor,if you gonear where high voltages are, monitors can hold voltage even after powering them down.so be careful you dont get electricuted.

Superbert1971, we're here to help you.

Based on the pictures you've posted of the screen on the monitor, you DO have a working monitor, but you need to do some more troubleshooting to get things working perfectly.

Dokert made a suggestion to pull the monitor and test it in the pacman game. That would be your easiest way to see if your Centipede monitor is working properly.

To get the monitor out of the Centipede game here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Unlatch the control panel by reach in from the back (rear door removed) and lifting the 2 latches that hold down the control panel. You can also unlatch these by reaching through the coin door open too.
  2. Swing down the control panel - it's on a hinge.
  3. Once the control panel is swung down, you can remove the monitor plexiglass. Set it aside.
  4. Remove the cardboard monitor surround (called a bezel). Set aside.
  5. From the rear of the game, you need to unhook 3 things from your monitor. 1. Power cord (2 prong plug usually), video cord (usually a gray cord going to the circuitboard on the monitor) and a ground wire. Unhook all 3. Take pictures before unhooking so you know how to unhook.
  6. Loosen / remove the 4 mounting bolts holding the monitor in the opening of the game.
  7. At this point, the monitor is unhooked and able to be removed. There are openings on either side of the monitor opening that allow you reach in and get a hold on the sides of the monitor's tube. Gently ease the monitor forward out of the opening, being careful not to catch the back of the tube on anything. The neck on the back of the tube is very fragile and is easily broken.
  8. Once you have the monitor out of the centipede, place it on the floor by the pacman machine, and unplug the power, ground, and video feeds from the monitor inside the pacman. If you're lucky, it'll be the exact same monitor, and then you can just hook it up the same way you unhooked it from the centipede.
  9. Power on the pacman, and see what you get.
Feel free to ask more questions here on the forums if you need more help!

Good luck! -STG

ok ill give that a try on my next day off...dont want to rush anything. they look to be the same so hopefully they wil work. thanks to all for the advice and help!

if he does that pacman is neg sync, top 3 pins, not the same as centipede, thats if he has a go7 in his pacman.

Doesn't matter, G07 will run either positive individual sync or neg comp sync.

All he has to do is plug the monitor in to the pacman and go.

well i was going to try it and gues what the monitor (i assume) went on the packman...but there is nothing but a grey screen now on it too...im not having lucK!!! hOW DO I TELL IF ITS THE BORDS OR THE MONITORS? I need to learn this stuff if i plan on having them. also what type of tv or monitor works best for the old games? especially one just for trying my games out to see if the boards are the reason. thanks!!!!

As an arcade newbie as of about 3 months ago, I found these youtube videos helpful for some basics: http://www.youtube.com/user/varcadegames

If you don't already have some basic equipment, then you probably at the very least want to get a multimeter to check everything out. I already had one myself and know some basics of working with electronics, but it's not necessary. Make sure you know what you're doing when working with monitors before jumping in too much. Even after being unplugged for years, a monitor could hold a charge that could shock the shit out of you, so be aware of that before shoving your hands and start working on the monitor.

With that out of the way, I'd start by looking at pacman before pics of how it was hooked up, which you did right? :) Get that going again before you dive into Centipede, and learn a bit more about working on the games. While it's not that hard to work on games, it's easy to hook something in wrong and cause even more damage...don't ask me how I know.

Best of luck
