Ok, making the jump to pinball... need help with Pinball Magic

Well, I am officially jumping into the pinball world, I have a feeling I am going to be regretting this hahaha... anyways, I picked up a Pinball Magic, It turns on and all, but the flippers don't work and it won't shoot a ball when you start a game. What should I look at first?

Not getting 12v

Capcom games im not too keen on though.

Not sure of all the voltage on those games, but it could give you a start

I figured that would be an old machine, but it looks pretty cool.

You will want to start here http://www.pinrepair.com/capcom/index.htm

That is one short guide for pinrepair :(

And with only 1,200 units made it is quite rare.

Have you checked the fuses? Pull them out to check.

EDIT: Lindsey beat me to it, and knows his stuff.

Agreed. Check the fuses.

By the way, have you run through the diagnostics in the service menu?

I've got one and think its apretty good pinball.

First, get or download a manual and then as fatsquatch suggeted run through the diagnostics. The diags will be your best friend, trust me.

Next look for broken wires especially where they solder to the components, switches, terminals, etc.

I had to repair about a dozen connections over a three week period when I first got PM.

You say it won't shoot a ball. Do you mean it won't load the ball from the outhole trough into the shooter lane? If so run the switch test and make sure all switches in the trough are functioning.
I had to mechanically bend some of the switch arm mechanisms to get some switches to work properly.

My biggest issue was and still is trying to find a replacement stage diverter arm. Mine was pretty beat up and hacked together. It was causing a few problems with the stage area.

I have a thread on another pinside site with pics and full details.
I have searched far and wide for a replacement diverter arm and nobody has one!!

Also the manual has the exploded view of the stage and wand diverter arms wrong.
The exploded view of the stage arm is really the wand arm and vice-versa.

Aside from the shit wire capcom used, PM is built like a tank. It gets heavy play and since I made a bunch or repairs has held up very well.

Also flipper strength is adjustable from the menu. I believe it is from 1 to 15.
I have mine set on 10.

Right on. I had a very similar experience after acquiring my machine, too.

Ok, went thru the test menus and figured out some of the problems, now the only thing not working is the left flipper, and it sounds like a solinoid keeps activating near the top of the playfield, havent pinpointed it yet though... what do I look for with the left flipper not working???
