Working on an Offroad Thunder, the "thumb" nitro button on the shifter is not working. I've tested continuity with the machine off and it does not make proper contact when depressed... so it needs to be replaced. I can't seem to figure out a way to replace just the switch which is located in the handle. I don't see any info in the manual other than the shifter as one complete unit. Is there any way to just replace the switch for the button?

Thanks,

Tom

EDIT: apparently one of the wires connected to the switch has broken free, but again, how to disassemble the shifter to get to where the wire needs to be soldered back to the switch.

Looking at the manual a good start would be to unhook the harness by getting to it from the back door and then remove the 4 screws on the shifter plate. The whole unit should then lift out. After that it should be a little easier to see how the rest will come apart to get to the Nitro switch.

(unless of course you already have the whole thing out of the machine)

Yes, I have the manual, and have removed the shifter. I can even remove the stick from the assembly, but there's no apparent way to get to the switch inside the top of the stick where the nitro button is.

That's crazy, I cannot imagine that being a non-serviceable part. I saw a picture of the actual button on Google search but for the life of me cannot find it now to show here. It basically appeared to be a regular style threaded pushbutton (perhaps shorter than normal) with a nut on the back. Perhaps you have to twist the button from the outside counterclockwise if you cannot get to the back of it whatsoever.

Other thoughts - the grip does not have any screws hidden there somewhere that would allow it to come apart in halves?

Just throwing out anything I can think of that might help.

has nothing..no set pins, no security screws..nothing... I looked at the piece around the button but it doesn't look like there's a seam...though that doesn't mean there isn't.

I'll have to take another look at it. I'm with you, it would be ridiculous for it to be non-serviceable

did you find a solution to talking off the button? Hydro thunder and offroad thunder have different shifters, but use the same button.

Hydro thunders manual shows a diagram of the shifter. If the handle does not split, then maybe the button will unscrew out...
