There have been a lot of threads started about indie games. Minecraft, Super Meat Boy, Amnesia, The Humble Bundle games, and VVVVVV come to mind. However, I find myself playing a lot of indie games that may not end up with their own thread for whatever reason - the ones I named above ended up being pretty big hits, so maybe that's why they got their own threads.

But what about all of those lesser knowns? Just because we play them and don't post about them doesn't mean we don't enjoy them. I do think that they deserve to be shared. Hell, that's what the indie game scene is all about.

So any of you who have played an indie game that others may not have heard about, share them here. Steam, flash based, xbox live, whatever - it doesn't matter.

Here are a handful of indie games I've been playing lately.

Jumper - this is a series that obviously played a large roll in the creation of Super Meat Boy. Hell, the main character Ogmo even ends up being one of the unlockables in SMB. This guys makes lots of games, all of which can be found via the link above.

Revenge of the Titans - If you love pixilated graphics, tower defense games, and didn't pick it up as part of the Humble Bundle, then you really need to get the move on and check this shit out.

World of Goo - Kind of old at this point, but still a great game. I couldn't get enough of this one. Also available on Wii and Steam.

Super Crate Box - The inspiration for this thread today, this game is absolutely amazing. It's hard as hell but you keep wanting more. There's going to be a multiplayer vesus arcade version of it (not here, unfortunately), which I'll be is just awesome. Definately worth your time, especially if you've been looking for some good old school arcade gameplay.

Spelunky - I haven't spent a lot of time with this one yet, but I really liked what I saw. The controls were a bit awkward, but if a gamepad can be used, I'll bet I could lost many hours to this one. Here's looking forward to the XBLA version!

Dwarf Fortress - Another oldie at this point, but still worth a mention. Do not be fooled by its simple ascii graphics...

Aether - A somewhat simple yet compelling story of a child and his pet. The looping music can get annoying, but that doesn't make the game any less fun. Developed in part by Edmund of Super Meat Boy fame.

Revenge of the Titans is great.

I've been playing Recettear as well. Not really indie - but a indie translation.

Minecraft has been awesome.

I find myself playing/enjoying more indie games than anything.

Recettear is pretty neat. If nothing else, it's a nice relaxing game. I picked it up on Steam when it was cheap during the holiday sale. I don't know that I'll ever finish it, but it's decent for a few bucks.

Super crate box is so hard! My record is only like 15.

anyone here ever play Cave Story?

I played through Machinarium, that was pretty fun, but some of the puzzles were too damn difficult (had to refer to a walkthrough in a few spots).

N+ as always... I just played that co-op for I don't want to know how many hours on Xbox Live. Since it's been out a few years it's getting harder to find others playing it online.

Since we're on the topic of indie games and all, don't forget that the Indie Games Festival is coming up and there is, of course, a competition going on. If nothing else, it gives you a chance to play some games you'll otherwise probably never hear of :)

Here are the finalists - check them out and vote.

There's a few from the list that I REALLY want to check out:

  • Bastion looks interesting - the art style sort of reminds me of the Mana series, which is cool.
  • BUTTON looks like a game my friends and I would have enjoyed several years ago during out many all night benders. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the many hours of Drunk Kart 64.
  • Confetti Carnival looks interesting, if nothing else...
  • Halcyon looks like it could steal a shit ton of my time, so I'm glad I don't have any sort of Apple anything :p If it comes to Android ever, I'm screwed.
  • It only took a few seconds of watching the video before I knew I wanted to try Hazard.
  • Helsing's Fire has a pretty kickass style, if you ask me. Bring the tonic, bitches!
  • Of course A House in California must be brilliant, right? Definitely going to find out.
  • I remember seeing a video of Miegakure a long while ago and had forgotten about it. Still very much looking forward to it, though...now that I remember it :p
  • This is the first I'm hearing of this Neverdaunt:8bit game, but I'm really looking forward to trying it out as soon as I'm done with this post. I don't know wtf it is, but the video makes me want to find out. EDIT: I don't get it, but I'm going to keep playing! :D
  • I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Nidhogg looks fucking glorious.
  • I'm not sure how many different games I saw in Retro City Rampage, but it must be made of win.
  • Solipskier reminds me of a cross between Line Rider, Bit.Trip, those old Tunnel games, and Canabalt. So in short, it has to be good.
  • Someone mentioned SpyParty a while back and I have to say that I am very much looking forward to failing at it.

I've played a bit of it, though not the WiiWare version - only the old PC version. I put it off for a long time because the videos and screens didn't interest me much. But, like most, once I started playing it, I was hooked.

Puppy Games (makers of Revenge of the Titans) has their three other games on sale in a bundle for $10 right now. I haven't played all three just yet, but all seem worth more than the asking bundle price.

It is glorious.
