Beware! Midway Games -Hydro Thunder, Artic thunder, Off Road Thunder, are dependent on a very specific video card from the 1990s. The machine will not boot up and no other video card will do. There are said to be work-arounds, but I'm not into editing the .exe file and brick the already broken game. It was an attempt to protect their games copyright, what it does is send their games to the dump. A fine legacy indeed.
I took a chance on this game, but as I feared the VooDoo II 8mb video card has expired. Time to polish a turd.

MAME is my only option at this point, let's gut it.

Good call. We had a client not long ago basically end up with a couple bricked Need for Speed cabinets because the very specific motherboards died and we (ADI) are not in a position to be doing neato custom stuff. I probably would have spent the extra couple bucks for a regular kb encoder, but seeing a kb matrix hack definitely brings back memories of looking at MAME builds on BYOAC 20 years ago. You'll get more mileage out of a multi driver cabinet. FWIW, Offroad Thunder is on Midway Classics volume 3 for PS2/Xbox if you really have the need to play it.

EDIT: Arcade Treasures 3 is all driving games, at least according to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midway_Arcade_Treasures_3) so that may be worth your time to emulate. I have a copy for xbox and remember it playing at least ok.

I'm trying to keep this game on a budget because I'm giving it to a friend.
I also wanted to share a couple pics for members that have never seen the old school KB hack. You're not locked into buying an encoder for a project. I need so few buttons for this build.

Still loading games and emulators. Time is running out, I deliver it in 30 days.

Thanks, -PC

I mean, I guess good on you, but a 8 meg voodoo 2 card would have never worked as from factory they were 10 meg. So any PCI 12 meg Voodoo 2 card would have worked fine in place of it. As far as I know Offroad thunder never used the video card security. It never seemed a issue when I was doing any of my tests anyways. (I know Hydro did but that was bypassed, and a HHD image is available easily) That said It is a really cool conversion and I give you props.
