Nvidia announces Project Shield handheld gaming system with 5-inch multitouch display

Not sure what to make of this. I guess it's an Ouya competitor?

Nvidia has just unveiled a new handheld gaming system called Project Shield. Project Shield is powered by the Tegra 4 processor and can play console-quality games while still providing a mobile experience. The processor is capable of pushing 4K resolution video over HDMI to external displays. It includes advanced sound processing that Nvidia says rivals Beats Audio-equipped laptops, and a 33Wh battery that provides five to ten hours of play time or 24 hours of HD video playback. It features a 5-inch, 720p Retinal multitouch display with 294ppi pixel density, and has a slot for micro-SD card expansion. The Shield runs Android — pure Android without a skin, as Nvidia insists — and includes Google's apps for Gmail and the Play Store.

Had me intrigued for a moment. But I still would prefer my phone w/ attached game controller. For the simple reason of one (small) device that fits into my pocket.

My phone can do all those things listed... Play console games, output to HDMI, multitouch screen, GMail and PlayStore, plus it can actually call people. :D

I admire their attempt, but speaking just for myself, the days of carrying a dedicated gaming device are over; because phones are more than capable for gaming these days.
That wasn't always true, but it is true now.

I work in this sector so I see all the news.

We have:

Moga - controller for your phone w/ a mounting clip.
Ouya - Android tablet board as it's own console.
Green Throttle - Controller and TV cable kit 4 android phones
Gamestick - controller w/ SFF Android as a console

not to mention just all of the other generic controllers and or small controller players out there.

and now Nvidia Shield - Controller, Touch screen, that can stream to TV and interface with your NVIDIA powered PC.

I keep saying how stupid Apple is that they won't put their tablet chipset, and some storage RAM onto the AppleTV w/ BT controller for their own App store console. They could market it at $150 and still make money.

what am I missing?

Archos Gamepad.

But yes, it's just getting plain silly. I was initially intrigued by the Archos, but then got turned off by the hardware specs. I have a Nexus 7 tablet with bluetooth controller capability and that's good enough for me. I'll be getting my Ouya in March too. I've been playing more on Steam and the Wii U. Been playing Gamecube again too. I'm all gamed out to be honest. Haha.

My problem is that I have TOO many games to know where to start. Going all the way back to the NES, honestly. I keep digging my hole deeper and never get to them. I finally finished up Walking Dead this past weekend, after playing through eps 1 and 2 many months ago and dropping it for a while.

I really need to work through my backlog and stop buying new shit...

LOL. I just finished Arkham Asylum for the first time on Steam. Moving on to Arkham City Wii U. I still have games on Steam I bought like 3 years ago that I've never played.

The problem is that the "new shit" is so cool sometimes. I told myself I wouldn't buy a Wii U but did anyways. It's been worth it to me so far. I don't really need an Ouya, but it seemed interesting enough and, if all else fails, it will be a great, compact emulation machine.

God forbid Nintendo announce their next handheld (non-DS) at E3 2014 to be released late-2015 or into 2016 (I'm just throwing out random years). I already know I'm sold. I just have this feeling. :D

The great thing about an Android game system is all your apps like pinball arcade will be there for you, you won't have to buy them twice.

They just need to add controller support to pinball arcade.

Overpriced? It's for the iPad...need I elaborate more than that?

This stuff won't cause some video game crash, if garbage like the iPhone/iPad/Idumbdumb haven't already done it, it isn't going to happen because of them.

Haha. Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but I was being facetious. I honestly haven't tried it so it could be a great product, I don't know. I was more disappointed that Pinball Arcade is not compatible with it. :)
