I wouldn't.... depending on the circuit it may experience reversing voltages, hence the non-polarized capacitor usage. If you put a polarized cap in there and the polarity does reverse for whatever reason it will blow that cap.

I agree, you can get away with it in some circuits if you know which side is more negative. But it's risky if you don't know what kinds of voltages will be present.
