Not to dig up something old

I don't know how common that boardset is. I've certainly never seen one in all my years of playing DK here in the US. The only game I've played with that board order is Crazy Kong (go figure :D )

I guess it just depends where you grew up in the world. :) All I ever saw was the japanese version back in the day, so I would get confused reading strategy guides when they'd reference the US stage progression. :p

These days though my preference is definitely the US version, it just seems to give a more varied feel with the mixing of the stages. The funny thing about it though is US players never got to see the elevator & conveyer belt stages at their initial Level 1 difficulty.

Well, I did say "here in the US" :D I don't know if the US level progression was used anywhere else in the world (I would guess Canada). I don't think DK was even common in Europe, supposedly Falcon had Crazy Kong licensed for use there (although many of their boards found their way here in the US). Where did you grow up that you saw the Japanese boardsets (is Japan too obvious? ;) )

The other hemisphere of course. ;) Saipan & Guam to be specific. And I did travel a bunch to Japan & Australia all the time (which were close & cheap) and visited arcades there, and it was always 1-2-3-4 Donkey Kong. Really the only chance I got to try the US level progression was when I got the Atari 400/800 version.

But yeah.. it's interesting to think if you put Billy or Steve in front of a jap boardset.. which of course is the actual original version of DK, how much it would affect the score. :)

I personally love the fact the US has the level progression they have. I remember as a kid playing BITD, it was such a big deal to "make it" to the elevator and even more so to the pie factory! Made something to strive for. I think I would have been bored quickly if they just came up in order every time.
