I got a free 27" tv that when powered on the tube makes the high pitched energizing sound then after about 1/2 a second it cuts out. Any idea what that might be?

Update:

OK I just plugged it in again, and this time the it powered on and displayed a picture for about 10 seconds and cut out again.

The behavior is that it will power on for a short time then cut out. If I unplug and plug back in it will not the power light will come on, but the tube will not. If I unplug for an extended time and plug in again it will work for a short time (10 seconds) before cutting out.

cold solder... cold solder... cold solder...

see if you can bang the krap out of it and make it work again..

if so you have a crackes(cold) solder jount..

9 out of 10 junk tvs like that just have bad solder...

check any and all transistors and ics that are heat sink mounted...

check around the power section, and also near the buttons..

i almost guarantee youll find it and fix it..

Wow, 3 posts in 10 minutes.

Sounds like you need to recap the power section of your TV at least, and maybe the entire chassis...
