So I got a NOS TMNT CPO on the way, and since it's 20 Years old, I'm wondering if I need to use some extra adhesive when installing it? like some sort of 3M spray glue or something. or is the NOS adhesive enough for a good install?

what I've done so far is remove the old Sunset Riders cpo, cleaned it with Iso pro alcohol, and sanded it down really good.

then I did some bondo work to fill all the holes where the plexiglass bolts used to be, and I also did a bondo skim coat over the entire cpo to fill all the dents and imperfections.

Finally I sanded that down and gave it a couple coats of black sand-able primer. Hopefully this should give the cpo a nice flat smooth surface to stick to.

any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't wanna screw this cpo up!

Your prep work sounds fine. Personally I've never applied any art over just primer. Not sure if that's advisable. I usually paint the surface. Often just use satin black out of a rattle can since 99% will be covered by the cpo. Make sure to give paint a few days to dry, cure and out gas so as to not cause any issues with the cpo.

If I remember correctly prOk who runs www.gamestencils.com used to offer a service where you could send him a cpo like yours and he would add another layer of adhesive to it to make it like new again. For some cash of course.

I would assume since most artwork companies always promote 3m adhesive backing go buy yourself a rattle can of it, spray your surface with an even coat - wait ~30 for it to become tacky and lay your artwork on it. You're smart to realize that the original adhesive is most likley not going to stick well.

looks like that's what I'm probably gonna end up doing. It would be a shame to have to ship it out to get the adhesive re-done on the cpo like suggested, it's a good idea but I think I will try my luck with the 3M spray and see how that goes.

If you want to get crazy, use naptha on the old glue. It will work on the glue and allow you to remove it. Be careful not to scrape at it and ruin the art behind the glue. Once you've cleaned the glue off, you can apply your own choice of glue.

I use naptha to remove old glue from CPs and it always works well. I also notice it doesn't affect vinyl at all. So that's why I suggest trying this, but I haven't directly myself.

One final thought: You could check the durabilty of the glue before you assume it's junk by peeling a small amount and sticking to something. To be honest, It was a pain removing the old panel junk off of my old CP, which is from 1982, (turtles is newer by at least 8 years?), and you may be suprised at how well it will still stick. Changing glues may be more harm than good. Personally I'd apply it, and when it fails, I'd then concider messing with it. I bet if its still maluble and sticky to the touch without being goopy and broken down or dry and cracked out, it's probably still good.

Thanks for the info. I think I may do as you suggest. once the cpo arrives here this week I will be able to have a good look at it and get a better idea of what I should do. most likely if its decent like you say I will give it a try as it is.
